I bought a new hedgetrimmer a couple of weeks ago, fueled it up, put it in the van and thought no more of it,

when i got to a job i took the lawnmower out and noticed there was petrol on the floor, checked the mower, but that was dry, it was the hedgetrimmer, not even used it yet,

I put it down to it being leant at a slight angle, so I wedge it upright with my buckets and it seemed o.k,

used it a couple of times - no problem.

Used it today - put it on the floor (level) whilst sweeping up, and it leaked again, the fuel is dripping from the air filter/carb.

What the bloody hell is going on with it? had my last hedgetrimmer for over a year it never dripped one drop and it used to be just chucked in the van with no wedgeing etc.

So any suggestions as to what might be wrong?, is it something needing adjusting?

Your help as always would be greatly appreciated.

If it's a new stihl with their new fangled filler cap, it's probebly that.

That's a good idea tony, i might just do that!

Andrew - why not give supplier a ring - if the are amiable/ knowledgabe then they may give you some advice or meet you 1/2 way with cost's of return?

It is a big inconvenience, The shop where i got it is 20 miles away so that's a 40 mile round trip, not including the sitting in traffic because it's in the city. so there's the diesel and time that i could be earning money instead.

does annoy me when things don't work properly. I bought a reconditioned lawnmower earlier in the year, It also started leaking petrol before i'd even used it, that dealer was 15 miles away, i took it back, he fiddled with it, i took it away and it did it again. It went back again this time he told me it was because i used a metal jerry can!! I asked him why i hadn't had the same problem with my other mowers that get filled from the same can. he fixed it again, i took it away and the damned thing did it again. i took it back and got my money back. cost me a fortune in diesel and time that did!

mine wasnt new though, ive got to take my chainsaw back i cant get the damn thing started. its a brand new stihl one but like you its going to be a huge inconvenience to take it back

It's not a Stihl Cesare, unfortunately there wasn't enough in the business account for a stihl. It's a Ryobi.

Without trying to teach my grandmother to suck eggs

Do you just use one equipment supplier or look for cheapest supplier online.

Although the nearest supplier will not necessarily be cheapest - if you can form a realationship with your supplier - it is better way of doing business. There are so many +'s for both parties

my chainsaw has a stupid filler cap must have been designed by an idiot, you cant grip it to turn it you need to use the screwdriver tool

I didn't want to buy second hand paul because they tend to be blunt and overused. I don't do an enourmous amount of hedgecutting so this machine would be fine for my needs, If it didn't leak!

Oh dear. a second hand stihl would have been a better bet, ryobi are domestic machines built to a price.

The problem with Ryobi (my first hedge trimmer was one) is that all the parts break after a few months of (light) use, so for the £100-£150 you spend on it, over 2 years you'd be better off getting a new Stihl one for 3x the price.

Ours lasted 5 months before it finally gave up, the blades rattling, fuel line came away and the primer bulb leaked. Finally chucked it last November. It was the Rht2660Da, Very shoddy piece of kit from experience.
