Have been building a raised bed from these this week, look pretty good with the tapered top.
Most fencing merchants stock these. I paid about £2+VAT per linear metre for 4" machined round.
You could also do the tapered edge with a Jig saw if used carefully.
there is a product similar to what your after called uni-log?
Have used this type of retainer many times. If using jump rails, the quality can vary tho, we had some that rotted within 5 years - not good! Take a look at this site http://www.mmtimber.co.uk/ if you want to be on the safe side.
When installing, as Paul says, bed on lean-mix and I would get some small sheradised pins just to tack the tops together as you go, otherwise they tend to wobble about. One third concreted in the ground and two thirds out is the norm. When doing straight runs, use a line for height and a scaffold board to butt against. For a radius, butt up against a 4 x 1 trammel.
I've just noticed you mention 6" above ground, so you will obviously need more than 2" concreted in!
