Large area of turfing...

I've got 330 square metres of turf to lay next week sometime and am wondering if anyone can help me decide between 1m2 and 13m2 rolls of turf.  How many men are needed for large rolls?  What other major differences are there that I need to consider? It seems a mighty large area to lay by the square metre!

  • I have laid quite a few of the 15M2 large rolls. Assuming that the area is all prepared before delivery two guys should be able to knock it out within the day.

The key is getting the rolls delivered close to where they will be laid. If the site is flat then you will also be okay to roll up and down to get the striped effect.

Once loaded on the machine, cut off the mess and unroll a metre length to get the turf lined up, one person will pull the machine whilst the other guys ensures that the turf is "fed out cleanly" then he / she jumps round and pulls out the mesh as you un-roll.

Use a rake to re-position the turf once laid, hopefully it will only require a little tug or push in places.

I found that on one or two rolls I couldn't get them loaded on to the machine, the plastic spindles where broken so used these for in-filling.

  • Ha. Thay are enormous. I'm going to attempt it. Will order some small rolls too, for fiddly areas. Man, the neighbours are going to love watching this. They already think we are supermen at the rate we have pulled everything together on this job!!
  • Neil,

If the turf centre isn't too far away, hold back from getting the small rolls till the next day just in case you are running behind schedule. A good soak in the bath after rolling the bad boys out is a must (why does that sound so wrong! LOL),
  • Good thinking. I've tried to ring Tim but got his voicemail. Will call him up to see if he can recommend. Otherwise I was going with Rolawn in Glasgow to start with. They do the medallion turf on a 13 sq.m. roll.

Yes, a slow hot soak in the bath seems like a good idea! No mental images attached!
