Hi Rowly and Duncan,
Thank you so much for your responses. I really do appreciate that it is tough for everyone at the moment but am determined to stick at it for now!
Duncan - I think that it is a very important aspect of what we do, and having just spent 4hours in the sleet and snow this morning for the induction of a new project, I must say its opened my eyes a little!
As I have come from studying Geography, the whole process from design to construction is new to me, and although we are studying modules that try to prepare us for all aspects I am super keen to get out there and start doing!
Thanks again for not leaving my post unanswered! I wasn't try to be a pest....just exhausting all avenues as advised!!
Best wishes
Why not contact the college, ask to be put in touch with some ex students, who have qualified and are practising Land Architects, ask if they will mentor you.
My partner is studying Land Arch at Leeds Met and one of her tutors, who has own practice is mentoring her.
Thanks Geoffrey that's a really good idea. How is your partner finding the course up in Leeds?
Duncan - if i'm honest I find the designing stage the most daunting! My drawing skills are one thing I really need to practice. Very hard considering most of our focus has been on trying to get to grips with AutoCad! As I said before it's a massive learning curve doing this as a post-grad course. We're covering drawing, computer software, plant identification, history THE LOT in such a short space of time! It is however extremely exciting. As you said about your father, things are always changing. I guess its what I signed up for - a challenge - couldn't stand the 9-5 and lack of sunlight!
Hi Jenn
Although I am not in a position to offer you a paid position over the summer, if you do have any spare time and fancy getting your hands dirty rather than being office based, you would be most welcome to spend a day with me planting or something later in the year?
Don't know which Autocad package you use at Writtle, but I work in Vectorworks - the other kind of thing we could do is a site survey together and then I could show you how to draw it up in Vectorworks.
I'm sure we could work out something that would be useful depending on what areas you most want to gain experience in - but of course one of the bigger companies may have snapped you up into full time employment by then! Anyhow, keep in touch and give me a shout nearer the end of your lectures etc
Best wishes
Jenny
Hi Jenn,
If you have nothing sorted feel free to drop me an e-mail nearer the time. We're a Chelmsford based design and landscaping company, we have an office on our show garden site so could hopefully give you some experience in there plus out on site if it was of interest.
Best of luck.
Andy
Jenny that would be amazing to come and do some planting and Vectorworks with you. We don't cover Vectorworks on our course, however I have heard that it is used a lot by designers in practice.
Andy - I read that you also studied at Writtle! Thank you so much, and again I would really like to come and gain some experience from your office also.
I am hoping that over the summer I will be working full time (Landscape or other - I'm an excellent waitress!) as bills need to be paid (boring), but I would really appreciate coming to spend time and learn as much as possible in any free time that I have.
Thank you so much for the offers, it really is very generous of you. Can't wait for the summer now!
Hi Andy
How did it work out with Ed (MA student from Greenwich) last summer?
Andy Westacott said:
Hi Jenny,
Ed was brilliant, great worker and really helped me out through a busy period.
He was out on site with me all the time so I'm not sure how useful it was for his studies but I guess he got a better feel for what it's like day to day on site and we had some good chats about materials and techniques that hopefully gave him a practical insight into the business.
We didn't have the office/show garden site at the time so hopefully any students we take on in the future will be able to get experience there as well.
