Reality is you have to pay whatever is required to get a good employee. I pay (unskilled part timers) £9.00 an hour. This gets me a decent bloke or lass who will stay the course and work hard. Skilled employees set their price depending on their skills, knowledge and experience.
When I owned a labour based business I always found the recruitment section in my local paper was a good source of decent employees. That was a few years ago now though, it may have changed since.
Now there are all sorts of rules and regs about the definition of full and part timers. I use mine twice a week (he's actually a student) so he is properly part time, I pay him legally and through the books so add tax NI etcetera .
If someone works for you full time there are other rules and regs you have to follow.....undoubtedly someone on here will be able to help or try the HMRC website.
You have been through a few though haven't you Andy?
I have been through so many and most are useless and seem to think any actual labour you ask them to do is beyond them.
Leaving them alone on a site to shovel scalping’s or soil gets them thinking they need a pay rise.
What would take you a couple of hrs seems to take all day for them, but going on FB on your phone is much more fun.
Asking someone to do simple commands will get the response “why what you going to do”
If they do complete a task they don’t think what can I do next, they just sit.
Good luck, if you find a good one pay him lots.
May of find a lad
Only thing that scares me taking someone on if one day there ain't enough work
Having employee 'dependants' does spur you on.. You may also find it helps you actually generate work as you feel more comfortable with those 'larger jobs', but it is a leap of faith. Run some figures through to see what it means you need to generate/earn.
