The current mild Autumn might mean that treatments for chafer bugs is still effective.

We have had reports of chafer bugs this week. The birds were feasting on them as they were near the surface. Once the temperature drops, the bugs burrow down for the winter and treatments are ineffective. The cost of treatments is quite expensive so you don't want to waste them, is it best to treat now or wait until next year?

  • I personally think you have to treat when there is activity and damage.
These grubs are the more likely 3-4 year life cycle so there will be grubs of varying sizes in the ground.
Merit will kill some of the younger larvae, but way not kill some of the older grubs, so you need to think of a program to break their cycle over a number of years (alternating when each year)

Its still warm enough that those near the surface will not be heading south, just yet!

  • Hi Anna,

You really need to be treating Chafer Grubs as soon as you see any amount of grubs present in the soil, or if you have missed that stage, as soon as any damage is visible. We supply a product called Equity which is for Chafer Grubs control and it can be applied at any time from now onwards, but not when there is frost present as the grub activity will be reduced and therefore the chemical will not be effective.

We also supply a product called Merit Turf which is possibly a better product for controlling Chafer Grubs, but it does cost more. It is not one we have on the website, but if you would like more information or prices on it, then by all means get in touch.

    Cheers, Ollie
