A client of mine would like a BBQ built into the patio area and the concept is fairly contemporary / classic themed. Anyone seen or built one? The design ideally should have work surfaces, storage and allow flexibility in the cooking (intensity of flame).

Hi Phil, I've experience of building basic charcoal-burning mediterranean-style covered bbqs,  with concrete countertop etc.

But as your client wants heat control, assuming it's either a mains or bottled gas steel bbq set up they're after.

This provider is very much top end, very contemporary, but it might give you some design ideas you could adapt..

Thanks Ian - It is as you say quite contemporary. I'm thinking of something more in-built with a rendered wall so it looks more integrated. Also with doing it bespoke, I can control the amount of counter-tops and levels of coals etc.

Thanks for you suggestions though.

Hi Phil,

Many of the readily available gas grills out there can be disassembled from their stands and counter tops. Some are designed to be built in so have no stands etc. They can then be fitted into a custom built work units which could be rendered blockwork. Just make sure you measure them precisely and have some kind of bracket/batten to fix the grill to. The counter tops could be single slabs of stone (to match paving?) custom cut by supplier. remember to specify thicker slabs i.e. 50mm as 30-35mm paving slabs would look a bit mean. Steel doors can be fabricated to your spec -stainless/galv/powder coated, or timber doors made and shelves fitted.
Gas bottles can be hidden behind one door, which saves having a Corgi registered person round which you would need for mains gas supply. Also remember to keep gas away from any electrics you might be fitting and check you're not invalidating any warranty for the grill and keep to manufacturers ventilation guidance.

Thanks Benedict - much appreciated.
