For what feels like months I have been getting home with soil through  my hair, grit and sweat in a paste all up my forearms, bashes and scrapes on my shins and grass clippings all over my trousers and in my shoes/socks and I am getting a little fed up! Every shower is a major scrubbing session, I can't even come in the house without taking off my clothes at the door for fear of dragging mud onto our cream hall carpet.

To top it off I am losing weight bit by bit no matter how much I eat. Started the season at 11st8 and have now crept down to 11st2. I can't keep he weight up no matter what.

Is there a way of doing this job without as much manual sweat muck and injury?

A bad day Dan ?folks would pay good money to lose weight and work in the worlds best office - outside.

I usually wear chainsaw boots as this keeps the dirt out.

I also wear a baseball cap to keep the sun and dirt off my head.

I know the feeling Dan,  My missus always frowns when i take my boots off and eject a pile of grass cuttings/soil/dust/sawdust onto the hallway floor, I'm amazed the waste pipe from the shower hasn't blocked up from the amount of brown water that goes down it every night.

I don't appear to be losing weight though?? 14 stone at the last weigh in, perhaps i'm not working hard enough???

I eat as much as I physically can, a few times a week I almost feel sick from it, and can't even maintain the weight. Winter time sees me gain a tiny amount but still eating like a pig. It's almost a serious issue and I have considered speaking to a professional for any advice they can give. I get very tired sometimes and this usually ties in with me losing a few lbs.

Lol. Exactamundo.

Hey Dan!

Just put on a shirt and tie, suit, shiny shoes and sit at your desk staring aimlessly at your computer for a few hours - then think - this is what lots of people do EVERY day to earn their money.......that should sort you out!

Too true, God i couldn't work in an office in a million years!

Eat loads of high carb rich stuff in the evening and drink beer. The weight gain solution for many a skinny man. Slows you right down the next day but this also has a positive effect on your weight gain!. (I except no responsibility for any after effects or loss of earnings).

I've worked with a tie on behind and desk - probably the dullest and worst part of my working career.  I'm ashamed to say I nearly slipped out of the 32" waist jeans for something more... well comfortable.

In my dairy farming days straw was an issue and now it's hedge trimmings.

The trick is Dan to ensure it doesn't get into the marital bed - something that may concern you soon:-))

As for the weight issue - as an old man ( relatively for LJ) I'm topping out at a massive 11st 11lbs. Which means I'm 1stone heavier than I was when I left school at 18. Thats the sublime beauty of manual work - you can eat and drink what you like and don't pile on the weight. I get paid for it - brillaint.

Hi Dan,

Yup I feel your pain mate.

Got mistaken for a gypsy a few weeks ago - by a methadone addict for god' sake! Was looking a bit rough to be fair. Covered in crap from a garden clearance.

Re the weight loss thing I take protein powder shakes a couple of times a week, not that I'm worried about losing weight (13st 7lb currently) just helps with the recovery a little when things are particularly tough and ensures you get enough protein. Personally I find it hard to get food down during the day when I'm really busy.

This should keep you clean?

I prefer the dust and grass to the engine oil, grease and particularly brake dust I used to get covered in working in the motor trade. Constantly feeling 'grimy' - no thank you.

As regards weight loss and fitness, I was talking to a very fit 76 odd year old that 'does' a few gardens near me - we worked out in just one day in his week he walks 12-14 miles behind various mowers.

He has been offered the use of a ride on for one large lawn but declined as it didn't meet his standards of finish...

 Hi Dan

I would have a chat with your Dr, it probably is just the work load, but there are a number of things that can cause you to lose weight - like type 1 diabetes for example, which also causes tiredness.

So not worth taking chances with your health, get it checked out.

Were there's muck there's brass
