I have been around long enough to remember the days before roundup . when couch grass was a major problem to control .
After attending Progreen weed control workshop on Friday there is talk that the water company's are wanting the use of Roundup reduced . the foil cap off a can of roundup is enough to pollute 6 miles of river .
Roundup is being restricted in some states in the america

  • I guess you are assuming that there will be nothing else replacing Glyphosate based weedkillers. If that is the case, then good old fashioned gardening methods will need to come back. I'd better not retire yet then!

  • the list of approved chemicals for the amenity industry is getting smaller all the time .There may well be chemicals to control these weeds but will they get approval for our use who knows . we need to use these chemicals wisely and safely to protect our own industry

  • Similar with Slug pellets - their are legal limits to how much can be applied and in the wet 2012 alot of rivers were exceeding the legal limits on Methocarb - the result if this became regular would be slug pellets being banned.

Correct dosing would help alot with weed killer over use - I know several gardeners (you know who you are.,.,.) who mix their tanks ad hoc and spray each plant until its dripping..... when a single squirt of spot treatment is more than adequate, and at a lower dose.

Last year I tried killing grass in plant pots at different % mixes with CLinic ace (generic Glyph) and found that at a single short spray, 3.6g/l strength tank mix killed everything within 21 days, 7 days at 7.2g/l mix.... Yet I normally use a 10.8g/l mix for spot treating....... I know many users whos mixes will be more than double this - If a weed persits after two visits Its either physically removed or repeat sprayed.

Don't mean to sound cynical here but I wouldn't read too much into this "fact".......from my experience, "facts" like this are sometimes churned out just for effect. Pollution could, theoretically, be 1 part in 1 billion or 1 part in 100. Perhaps the former could be attributed to a roundup cap but at that level, which won't make a scrap of difference, I'm sure that everything else will be there too if you looked for it. Reminds me of homoeopathic medicine!!

  • my view is that if it was such a problem why is there a water course recommendation on roundup labels
i am only passing on what was said at this meeting and it was there words not mine if you check out the amenity forum web site you find it there i also think that the general public possibly cause more problems than contractors

  • I think you're right there about the "water course recommendation"...... doesn't make sense. Realised you were only passing on the stuff from the meeting though..... wasn't blaming you at all!!! Unfortunately, when people give these "lectures", they can let their own prejudices influence what they say so you don't get a true picture of things.

I saw this http://www.theguardian.com/business/2014/feb/03/green-weedkiller-we... recently. It uses foam, made from natural plant oils and sugars, and steam and suitable around water courses. Check out the link http://weedingtech.com/
I don't do much maintenance at the moment, although looking at getting back into it, so I haven't researched how suitable it would be for the smaller business. Lets get investing?!

Just been reading the 'Success stories' part of their website. Really interesting, especially the control of Crassula , growing in ponds in the New Forest
