How do you dispose of old kit ?

We've a growing pile of old kit, way way past it's best and generally broken or past it's reasonable service limit to repair.

We've no desire to spend hours and £££ trying to fix this type of kit. It's written-off so not costing us money and our time is better spent on generating revenue

Where & how do you dispose of this type of kit ?

The obvious answer is fleaBay and the like.... but for real 'scrap kit' does it work or generate more hassle than it is worth ?

  • Certainly ebay, as folks seem to buy anything. Alternatively, weigh it if its metal, or put it outside with a sign say scrap on it, or as one guy did, put a sign on it saying this is valuable do not remove.... & it disappeared !

When I sold up in 2004 I put an awful lot of old (some broken/broken down) kit on eBay that the new owner didn't want to take when they bought my business.

I couldn't believe the prices people paid and the distances they travelled to collect.

  • If it says stihl on it you'll be pleasantly surprised at what people will pay. Even sold as spares or repairs i've had over 100 for a humped hs45 hedgecutter and the same for a seized scrap combi hedge cutter head. Very easy money. Even if your very frank and honest in your description regarding condition you'll still do okay.

  • Ours seems to slowly get stripped down for spares and then take up space, I'm currently relocating to a bigger yard so will be having a good sort out and prob eBay it

  • Just a word of warning if you use fleaBay and the like then be careful as to where you get the buyers to pick your old gear up. Last two times I sold old kit I got turned over. After the first time I pull kit from the yard and sold from home and 2 days later also got turned over - may be just unlucky but by selling on these sites make sure the buyer has good feed back and you have contact details for them.

The last two ride on's I sold for spares was to a Polish chap who I knew via a contact and he paid top price without seeing the gear and exported it to his homeland.

One the local repair shops I use also buys sprap kit if he has a need for it or can usually sell it on to one of his contacts. If I have knackered leaf blowers I tend to give them to him - you scratch my back etc..

Dont get rid. As we say in yorkshire if you never use it it'll come in for sommat.

  • ill buy it all dependent what you have or try selling it to your dealer for spare parts for his customer's

  • As above Ebay and beware how much you let unknown buyers see. Recently sold my old Makita cordless kit and surprised at its value as spares or repair.

I literally give my old unused mowers and broken faulting kit to my dealer and negotiate a free service or blade sharpening etc
The thought of an unknown been in my yard eyeing up my new kit is never a comfortable thought
So for literally a few quid I know my dealer will make something on it and I get a few favours back
Ie call outs on breakdowns etc
I'm no great mechanic and sold as seen on eBay is ok but I'd hate someone local to me to buy something and resent me when it goes pear shaped

Totally true - I broke my Oldest Pro46 for spares for the other two this month - came in bloody useful - wheels, blade, flaps, drive shaft, recoil.. many more good bits to scavenge.
