Henchman - Pro or regular High-Step

Hi all,

Just wondering which model users on LJN opted for and if they are happy with their choice. I notice the pro version is a little heavier but also a fair bit more expensive. Is it worth the extra expense? Personally it might only be used once a week.

Also, as per previous post I am looking to either get a Midi with an extension or the Senior with the extension. Bit concerned about getting the Senior to fit in the roof space of my Hi top LWB Transit though to be honest as the dimensions are v close.

Mainly cut hedges around 6/7ft mark but would like the option to go higher. Will the senior be too big to cut 7ft hedges?

All views welcome.

Cheers

Andy

Hi Andy, I use an older steel Henchman (which I believe to be a Midi??), which takes me up to anything I want to get involved in cutting - the Senior in my opinion will be FAR too tall for cutting a 7 foot hedge - from the Henchman website -

Senior minimum height is 4 foot six, so if you are around 6 foot, you are going to be over 10 foot in the air - so leaning down 3 foot to cut a 7 foot hedge...........

I happily do hedges up to around 10 feet high off my Midi without any problems - although considering getting the extender kit for more flexibility, which may be more useful than carting a Senior around - as for getting it in the roof space of the van - you must be MUCH stronger than me (or have more than one person) - I take the legs out of mine to lessen the weight and store in onto top of the wheel arch box in the rear driver side ratchet strapped to the wall.

    Just my thoughts!

  • Hi Adam,

Meant to say, I also have the option of using a hop up with a Kombi and long-handled hedge trimmer attachment which will defo do me for six foot and prob seven foot high hedges so may not need the Henchman for the lower ones.

I'm also comfortable cutting at waist height as well as shoulder height.

Reason I am thinking of the Senior is that I have a customer with a 14ft high hedge, approx eight feet across the top, they would like doing, and I would prefer the extra height the Senior offers.

Re the weight, the aluminium ones are only 20kg so not too bad. Would store the extender separately.

    Thanks for your feedback.

  • Hi Paul,

Hmm, now I'm in a quandry.

Are you happy with your Midi or do you wish you had gone for the Senior so you wouldn't need the extension section?

I have a midi pro, I went for the pro as I wanted the heavier gauge aluminium profile, and also since the kick boards make it acceptable with the H&S department of the housing association I occasionally work for.

I can cut everything from 5'- 8' with ease and 10' at a push although for tall hedges I prefer to use an extension ladder and board or walk across them.

The henchman weight is ok if the feet are taken out but heavy with them in, the bolts on the frame make sliding on to a roof rack awkward albeit do able.

I do have an extender but don't use it as it is IMO a faff and in the time taken to set it up I can have cut 20' with the extension ladder and board. That said short long hedges on uneven ground the henchman is great for and a time saver.
  • Yeah, I was kind of hoping so too John.

    Thanks

I think you will be able to stand on a 4'6" platform and cut a 7ft hedge, as it will

    be just under waist height.

  • Ok mate,

Cheers for that. Gonna go for the Pro Midi but will need the extender unfortunately for some of the bigger hedges.

    Thanks again

Andy, I'm completely happy with it, it's easy enough to do the odd tall job with the extension ladder and for the standard 6-8' hedges I'm using a relatively light option rather than something that is bigger and heavier than I would normally need.

As I say for me the extender for the midi is too greater a faff and the senior overkill for most of my jobs.
  • Hello Andy

I'm happy to sanity check your decision if that would be helpful, though you have had good feedback above - there are one or two details i could add.  You can reach me on 01635 299847 or  07775 864878 any time.  I have no bias in wanting to sell Pro rather than standard nor a bigger model than is best for you.

    Best Regards.

    Tom

  • Hi Tom,

Just picked up your post but alas too late. Have ordered the Pro version Midi with extender off you guys as planned. I'm sure it will do the job.

    Cheers

    Andy
