I will be constructing a small courtyard deck in the next few weeks and need some advice on planting... I am going to create raised beds and benching coming out of the deck all clad in Ipe decking. I know that I would like green leafed plants but have no idea what names to look for as I specialise in the hardscaping of gardens etc... seeing as the area is very small i thought I would give this planting ago... any advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you Gaynor! Ferns seem to be the way forward as that is what i like the look of whilst i have been researching ferns and grass seem to go well and a little colour inbetween would just finish this small space! thanks alot
Some very nice combinations there Gaynor :)

Some good ones to try - Fatsa japonica, Bamboo, Chusan Palm, Hakonechloa macra (japanese grass), Musa basjoo (hardy banana), Dicksonia antarctica (tree fern), small ferns, Hosta, Buxus semperviens (common box), Carex (ornamental grass).
Just an Idea,
Few ideas that may worth remembering, ( I did many similar projects on roof gardens)
1. If you use a mix that is airy ( by adding 50-80% of these : perlite/ vermiculite/ coir) you will be able to enjoy far bigger plants on that size of planters used. (but you will need to provide good fertilizers compost or slow release)
2. We used Pvc liners with drainage system built to it, you can built it too.
3. One of my customers sent me this image:
The railing planters became to a fashion in many countries by now. The look you get with the colour combinations can be so different ( black and White/ range of you bright colours/ Red/ Green etc).
hope it helps to inspire
