Have a decking clean and stain to quote for any advice?

I have a decking cleaning and restaining job to quote for, thinking of using Hypocholrite mix to clean the wash of with standard hose.

The decking isnt very green but its existing stain is basically faded in areas and is patchy, will the hypochlorite help with removal of existing stain so I can stain again from scratch? or what is better to use?

the area is about 5X4 meters with bannister and about 6.5m of side panneling.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

  • Be very careful if the existing stain is flaky, I have been in the unfortunate position of trying to remove peeling/ flaking decking stain and it can be a horrific job. Hypocholite will remove greeness and help clean the timber but it will have littler effect on stripping the actual stain.

Power-washer might be the best bet. Personally i would perhaps avoid this job if you are busy enough or at least be aware of how long removing patchy stain can take.

  • My thoughts exactly, not extrordinary busy but dont need the headache even if use proper decking stripping agents that are available. Keep getting offered painting jobs but definately havent advertised as a decorator lol.

  • You could maybe explain to the client how potentially long it would take and offer to do it on a day rate? Its one of those ones you know you'd lose out on giving a price.

  • also interested to know where you are based as water companies still have hose pipe ban inforce in most of South UK!

  • I would not recommend power washing as the jet can damage the timber.  The effect looks good at the time until it dries out and may then need sanding!
