I have been trying to perfect the use of my 3D Designer program with varied success. The thought has occurred to me that customers might prefer the traditional hand drawn design which has a more one off personal feel. I would be interested to hear the thoughts of designers and customers alike. As I have never trained in IT hand drawing comes more naturally to me.

I also use SketchUp and it really is fantastic (once you've overcome the somewhat daunting learning curve). I used to use it to design restaurant interiors, but since going freelance I'm trying to focus more on the outdoors like these attachments.
I'm aware that this is blatant plugging of my business, but I'm hoping that this is permitted ;-)

Welcome to LJN David

I think you've done it in a gentlemanly fashion. However if you unlock your profile the benefits could be much greater.
Nice work;-0)

Permalink Reply by Faith Caine on March 29, 2013 at 8:46 Hand drawing is an art and I believe a certain amount of talent is involved. I could not do the art but I could do the Cad. Personally I think a mix of both is good.

I see a difference whether we are working commercial or residentially.
Commercially, it always CAD, very clinical, accurate, no room for perceptions etc
Residentially, see a mixture. Like a CAD drawing for actual execution of plan, but a hand drawn or rendered plan has some feeling, some emotion.
You see what the Designer was thinking originally. People like some of this aspect as at the end of the day, the garden (once built) is a statement reflecting the client desires.
I suspect as 3D modelling improves that will change and all client presentations will be from a Tablet etc and perhaps the lines become even more blurred ;-)
Does that make sense
Permalink Reply by a design and build company on March 29, 2013 at 12:15 A bit of experimentation of a simple job I'm working on.
No "real" pen-and-ink or water-colour paint involved in the production of this image, just SketchUp, Render, Cheap Landscape Software and a bit of Photoshop.
By no means the finished product as I've accidently textured the windows with wood and there are no shadows etc., but as a work in progress I'm quite pleased with it as a quick process of creating non-photorealistic (NPR) images.

I am always staggered/quietly impressed with what software in the right hands can do, David :-)
Proves the point that the lines are blurring now......

I have found most clients do prefer the CAD drawing and it saves me alot of time!! So although hand drawing is nicer over all - I tend to only do the rough / starter sketches by hand. Also, with CAD (or sketchup or other) I can even design in the meeting with the client. It helps them feel like they are involved.
No question in my mind - especially as it is more value to the client for less time !!!
