Hailstones and bedding plants

Just got back in from my first job of the morning - Here in Yorkshire its just had a hail shower - which has shredded about £100 of bedding plants!

Has anyone else had this before? Its a pain in the rear, and hopefully the plants will recover by mid june - but still a knockback!

I got it in North This morning, apparently it didnt get as far as wetherby - was about 8:30 - certainly hail though - and did quite abit of damage to some petunias - however At another site this afternoon no damage. hmm Anoying none the less

Just checked the forecast for North leeds tonight

" with a frost likely to develop, especially in rural areas" not good! oh well.

I had just put my tomatoes out 'to harden off' - bad timing! I've never seen such violent hail - by the time I ventured out to rescue them, entire leaves were being knocked off the toms, and other plants had holes punched right through the leaves: impressive!

Still too early for bedding plants where I am in the South, despite the garden centres selling them for week!

no hail hear Dave, bit early for bedding, the nurseries will be rubbing there hands with the frost i know Someone who has planted out twice already because of the frost.  where do you go for yours?

looks like the hail was quite patchy!

This morning a nice frost on the ground as well - finished off my potato plants. joy!

David - I usually get mine from Riverside in Collingham/Linton - for shrubs I go upto Borobridge and Johnsons of Whixley.

I usually try to avoid planting bedding till the 1st of June, but this year thanks to the warm start we had, Everyone is asking for bedding now! So far I've managed to veer mostly towards pansys which can take more cold, so fortunate in that at least.

For bedding you should try Dalby's in York, they are a major grower, you could go there and easily fill a lorry

for shrubs &, trees & hedging

try Henleys near Market Weighton, better pricing than Johnsons IMO
