Ive advertised it for 5 years in the last 7, and people dont take it up because they only really want things reactionally, not pre-empting. When I have quoted it, they are not interested, but when it did freeze they phone the morning everybody is snowed in..too late.

Im sure that the firms who do gritting work must be covered? Can I ask you Rob if I might how did you work out your costings when quoting ?
If other member on here have any more view please get in touch and aslo whay machinery they use? Many thanks Andrew.

public liability will not cover me. The advice was to go to the british institute of insurers web page and search for or call them to see which providers will provide cover. I haven't got round to it yet, but my gut feeling was that it would not be worth it for the return. I still have not ruled it out though. As a slight side project I have been buying rock salt in bulk and selling it on to existing customers. People have been quite keen to take it , and get some in before the bad weather does or does not come.
We offer a grit delivery service. Simple and good money. Plus we dont have to worry about laying the salt.
if you dont mind me asking where do you get it from in bulk so that you make a good return on it? can you buy it in those bulk bags and then you split it into regular sized bags or do you just buy standard sized bags pallet delivered?
Permalink Reply by James Wells on October 30, 2011 at 21:05 I buy them by the pallet in 25kg bags. Searching online for the best prices delivered to me.
from my experiance , theres not alot of profit in such an activity , first you need a supplier who will supply you as not many will as there books are full ! the last i enquired last year it was £85 per ton , or straight from the docks at £55 for slag , ( salt mixed in with other things ) the price is also raising each year , i have been following such work for a few years and found it not to be that good financaily , the alternative if you manage commercail sites is to sub contract , this way you will always profit !!!
