Green waste

I was wondering whether anyone knew of cheap places to use for this season and for future seasons for disposing of my green waste. Normally I have at least 3-4 dump sacks a day, sometimes more.

I can't seem to find any places in my area, I've been given a price of £30 from a farmer that is based at Shoby, about 18 miles away from me which means going out of my way, potentially 36 miles a day just to dispose of green waste, which based over a week would be a huge difference to my fuel bill!

I'm based in Grantham, so anywhere within that region or surrounding areas would be great, most areas I pass through or work near.

Much appreciated,

Rob

Just a thought here Robert, do you HAVE to dump daily, or can you do what I do and collect the best part of half a week to a weeks worth before tipping?

Although that said I have just invested in a BIG mobile shredder to reduce this further (hopefully).

Although I am also in Lincolnshire the green waste site nearest us is on the Lincolnshire/Cambridgeshire border - http://www.organicrecycling.co.uk will give you their address - although I google maps estimated it to be around 40 miles each way from Grantham centre - so a bit out of reach for you I would imagine.

Oh and welcome to LJN by the way - nice to see a few more members appearing a little bit closer to me!

  • That's a lot of waste every day. I guess you just have to make sure you are charging the customer the total cost of waste, time and mileage. Must be at least 50p per mile, the £30 tipping fee, plus at least an hour's round-trip.

I have a similar round trip, but store it up until the trailer is jammed full. Usually once a week is the maximum I need to go.

Sorry for late reply chaps, been busy with family and working! I have a lot of sub contract work that I do which keeps me busy most of the week. This is generally what generates so much waste, most of my domestic jobs let me use their green waste bins for most of the garden waste unless its full.

I'm just stuck in a rut at the moment, i'm driving a little over 90 miles a week at the moment to drop my waste off at this farm, for the moment which is free - only because it is where the client I do a lot of sub contract work for gets rid of theirs. Obviously i know them very well as i used to work under one of the managers for two years before I was made redundant.

There is places near by but they want £25 a tonne bag, this would simply break any kind of profit margin that i have. At the moment i am literally only earning enough to pay my bills.

  • what sort of waste is it? A builders bag of grass shrinks in volume by about 40% in a week, so stockpiling grass for dispossal makes alot of sense, other waste types less so. Mulch mowing would also help you produce less waste.

  • Hi Robert,

This sounds tough. Personally, if people want me to take large amounts of waste then they have to pay the tipping cost plus the time. Only a fair amount, but fair to me as well. Small amounts, say one black bag of grass cuttings, I factor in to a weekly tip run.

I think you need to look at what you are charging. If they won't pay a reasonable amount for unusual quantities of waste, let them find someone else? You have to sell yourself properly: you have a waste license, you use a registered waste site, you have to charge. If they want to save money using fly-tippers, that's up to them, but we all pay for it one way or another!

Sometimes it's worth looking at a job and working out if the extra costs, and time, really make it worth the effort. Those hours might be better spent finding new clients....

  • I have a 40 mile round trip to my dump. Its a farmer who charges £20 a load, he then sells it on to a large national company to be turned in to biomass - clever eh?

I find my self saving loads up in the trailer to make my journey worth while. Still alot less than my local waste recycler who charges £60 per ton - i could be up to three tones sometimes with the tipper van and 16ft ifor !!

Id take it for the moment and keep your eyes peeled for anything else.
