Could not work out what he did as it was smashing it down with rain. How do these companies get away with it?

  • By National advertising MW - too many people are impressed by glossy presentation. Maybe they should look up part of the franchise blurb...........'No experience necessary'......before picking up the phone!

  • At this time of year I cant imagine anything they can spray can have any effect - if its raining it washes out and fertilizer should have been done by now.....

  • Nothing wrong with running an efficient business and doing a spray job in ten mins...that's not the sort of job that requires any more time, but of course it makes you wonder what on earth he was up to spraying in the rain in November. My guess is iron. Chances are it WILL have some efficacy though not ideal. He'll be scarifying in a fortnight.

It is possible they were spraying Carbendazim for the control of worms.

Whilst it's not advisable to spray during rain. it's a common practice to spray when it's wet and with rain due because Carbendazim needs a high water volume application to be efficient. Rain helps the operator to achieve required results without having to lug heavy knapsack sprayers full of water around.

    Have read of this:

The second part of our integrated approach is to optimise the effectiveness of the worm killer. When we spray for earthworms, much of the chemical will remain on the leaf. A typical carbendazim label recommends a spray volume of 500 to 1000L of water per hectare. A light shower of rain that deposits 1mm of rain hardly penetrates more than 2 to 3 mm of the soil profile. This 1mm of rain is the same as spraying at 10,000L water per hectare, so unless we water the chemical in thoroughly we are not going to get the product very far into the soil. This is fine because to encourage the surface casting worms to ingest sufficient carbendazim to kill them, the best plan is to serve it up as a dressing on a freshly mown grass salad! The surface feeding, surface casting worms can then be dealt with leaving the remaining worms in the soil unharmed. The method is simple; apply the chemical and when dry mow the turf leaving the clippings on the surface. Leave the grass box off for the next two to three cuts. On fine turf areas such as golf greens or on bowling greens and cricket tables during the playing season this is not always possible due to the demands of play. For bowling and cricket then, the best time to tackle the problem is in the early autumn and early spring when these areas are not in play.

  • Think theres more chance of me winning the lotto tomorrow than him spraying that Phil.
  • Although we moan and criticize them,I reckon for the price, they do a reasonable service which is ideal for people that require basic lawn maintenance without wanting a regular gardener. The majority of homeowners don't own a decent knapsack sprayer or fertilizer spreader...... I've seen so many damaged lawns with hand-spread fertilizer or weedkiller applied with a watering can ...... GT will fertilize/weedkill a lawn for virtually the same price that the homeowner would have paid for the materials from the local DIY store.... No I don't work for GT lol!!

Funny I was on the phone today ordering products for my winter lawn feeds.

Turf green-up from iron applications can last between several weeks and several months, depending on weather conditions following application. Applications during cool, wet periods (when turf is growing rapidly) enhance color for only two to three weeks, whereas applications during cool, dry periods (when growth of turf is slow) may last for several months.

  • Hands up all those who would apply a lumbricide in any domestic setting? I for one would decline any customer who requested it.

  • Imoral in my opinion - without worms were all dead, that and I can hardly think of many domestic customers who would pay £30-60 yo kill worms in their lawn twice a year!
