Don't know if anyone else has experienced this before,
Got my car insured via Go Compare, put all the details in
plus the modified exhaust (bought it with it on).
Got to the final page and these details were not shown, but
the total premiums were approx £100 dearer ( I checked without it)
All ok after I spoke to the broker, after she made a phone call.
Got sent the policy and no mention of the exhaust, phoned to check,
and was told that it would be ammended when it was sent back, said
he had notes saying that the exhaust was modified but would not make the
car go faster. I queried this as I had no idea what it did. I was then told to get the
information from a garage, so phoned my garage and yes it can make the car go
faster as well as improving fuel economy. Was then told that in that case they
couldn't insure it and would give me seven days grace. A bit later someone from the call
centre phoned to say that she had checked my Go Compare details and disputed my claim
that I had entered the details correctly, I explained the situation and went into my GC account
and assured her that it was there on page three, and I would copy and paste it.
The last I heard they were trying to see if the GC rep could access the my account to see
what is what. So I am now waiting for Barry Grainger Insurance to get back to me on Monday.
Should have stayed with the AA !!!!

We all know what they want to do, take the money but have an opt out clause
in case there is claim.

The problem is that car insurance companies don't really know all that much about cars, lol.
Replacing a factory or aftermarket factory reproduction with stainless (as an example) will not necessarily have any effect whatsoever on performance, or fuel economy.
There is a common misconception that reducing 'back pressure' in an exhaust system will increase performance. That's a bunch of b.. bananas.
Creating a 'tuned' exhaust, on the other hand, can. Tuned exhausts control the speed of the exhaust gasses as well as attempting to minimise back pressure. Same thing with aftermarket branched manifolds, they have to be tuned, too large a diameter and you'll actually slow the exhaust gasses to suboptimal rates of flow. Taking your cat. out will reduce back pressure also, but the factory systems are tuned to account for this restriction in flow being in place.
Unless you own an old Audi (which had galvanised factory exhausts) your car will most likely at some stage end up with an aftermarket system on it, it doesn't, or shouldn't, make any difference to insurance who made it or with what material. You're unlikely to find many companies in Britain who can actually increase the performance of your car, in reality, by building you an exhaust system, there are a few around, but not many. Most of them bank on the increase in noise to make you think your car is faster and that you spent wisely.
Insurance do tend to make lots of uninformed decisions, when it comes down to it unless you've doubled the size of your engine, fitted forced induction or a nitrous oxide system you're unlikely to do any damage in terms of increased performance by 'modifying' most cars.
Permalink Reply by John on August 13, 2012 at 12:41 I have been in touch with Go Compare and surprise surprise BG ins'
has not been in touch with them. They have checked my details and
it was put in correctly, although it does not show the modification on
the final page, it is sent directly to BG insurance. So who knows exactly
what they are playing at.
Go Compare will be asking them to honour the agreement.
It has cost me a fortune in telephone calls.

Alchoholics anomymous?
Permalink Reply by John on August 14, 2012 at 7:34 Had a phone call late yesterday, the Go Compare complaints team
will be talking to them sometime in the next two days. They are
saying that their computer program is not picking up the modified section ?
And yet even when I spoke to them about it they failed to put it down on the policy
they sent to me, and when I phoned it was down in their books as a none engine
improving exhaust, which was to cost me an extra £100 to insure ??????
Someone is talking utter bull****.

Permalink Reply by John on August 16, 2012 at 18:11 The saga continues.
Spoke to Go Compare yesterday, who advised me to start
looking for another quote before the deadline, just in case
they could not sort out the mess. Found a reasonable quote with
LV and decided to go with it.
Phoned up GC to tell them, and asked them to make sure there were no
cancellation fees. Everything seemed fine.
Got a phone call from GC saying they had a new quote from BG insurance
covering the exhaust and that BG ins' are claiming they offered this to me,
(which they didn't).Thereby allowing them to charge me £66 as a cancellation
fee to the policy they would not honour.
I had cover for about a month, so I am prepared to pay a twelfth of the premium
as long as they pay back all my telephone charges. Premium £320 = £26.60 minus
tel' calls.
I will never use Go Compare ever again or Barry Grainger insurance brokers. And will
be taking this fiasco to the financial ombudsman if it is not resolved quickly.
Permalink Reply by John on August 17, 2012 at 17:19 BG insurance are only going to reimburse me approx £260 of the £320,
but Go Compare have calculated that the insurance cover I have had from
them should be approx £29, so they are giving me £30 as a good will gesture.
So bye bye Barry Grainger insurance, I never quite figured out why your telephone
number changed three times in the first two weeks ??? - Maybe oftel can tell me.
