Garden maintenance in Cornwall?

Being that Cornwall is one of the least wealthy of our Counties does that reflect on the prices paid and the availability of work there. In particular for garden maintenance. Is there a boyant market in the second homes sector?Which are the most affluent towns?Thx BenPS I wanted to send this just to 'Cornish landscaping' but couldn't find the button so apologies to all those to whom this is completely irrelevant!

  • Merci Beaucoup...as we say in Scotland.
  • Great. Have made friends and left you further details on your page. thx
  • Hi Ben

I originate from Cornwall, a place called Tintagel on the north coast. Although I left Cornwall a long time ago I am still in contact with my old school friends. One of my friends was telling me that he was looking for a gardener to look after his Mums garden and just could not get one, all fully booked.

I would imagine there is some distance between each customer if you are based in the more rural area. This alone must impact on your earning potential compared to working within an affluent city area (like what I is, ooo argh, ooo argh) sorry just slipped back to my Cornish roots.

I would think you would do better if living near Truro, Newquay or Bodmin for instance.

Are you thinking of emigrating? would need a passport you know!!
  • ...thx ...emigrating! Yes I think I will be an 'Emmet" (?)! But I've been called worse things.
I know Tintagel...King Arther and all that...if I remember from my youth there is an awesome inlet where the sea goes crazy when the tide comes in...but I was about 6 so it may have been a trickle. ;)

  • I rekon this descution could be taken bigger! Such as Different work rates and labour charges.

Personaly I live between Luton and Milton Keynes about 10 mins from M1 junction 12, so easy acsess about. I can get a good work load summers of course better and I can charge £15 - 20 an hour for maintainance, and i can get between £100 and £150 day rate if I push it. If I travel 30mins south IM inside the M25 and can charge £25-30 hour maintenance and £150-£200 day rate.

I have a Friend who has his own landscaping company, he lives about 30 mins up the A1 from stevenage. He frequently works in areas such as stevenage/ Welynn Garden City and other afluent areas and manages to charge £200 a day for landscaping, It is only 3/4 hour away from me, on a good run 2 hours on a bad, so dont bother too much. But It shows how within such a small area how rates can vary!
  • Hi Ben

this is not good as it is bringing back my fondest childhood memories. But yes, as you say there is a cove called Trebarweth Strand where the surfers go and the sea and foam rushes up the gully and, and, and, Oh no the memories. .

No, only kidding, Cornwall is a horrible place I wouldn't consider living there if I was you. The sun is to hot, the air is to clean, cant be a healthy life being a gardener working out side in all that.

Forget it, bad idea Doo !!!!
  • Keep this discussion going in the main forum please!

I can't beleive there is a gardener, landscaper or garden designer out there who hasn't thought about re-locating to Cornwall.

Yes I imagine it can be a bit of a ghost town in winter but the summers must make up for it!

Forget the Eden Project and Heligan and visit Tresco Abbey Gardens, Trebah, Glendurgan, Lammoran House, Morab Sub-tropical Gardens, Pine Lodge Gardens and St. Michaels Mount and be inspired by 15ft Echiums, 40ft Trachycarpus, Mature Phoenix Canariensis and Jet black Aeoniums all growing side-by-side.

Also Falmouth College runs a Post Grad Garden Design course taught by tv designers Richard Sneesby and Matt James.

I've heard it's a good 'p**s Up' in Newquay too!

    Ahh Cornwall 'the promised land'......
  • "Keep this discussion going in the main forum please!" What does that mean exactly?

  • The Promised Land?!, The Hot Sun?!. It has rained and rained and rained. But no we are lucky, the last two quay jobs and some of the locations are awesome. Newquay though can be very very dangerous at night and virtually everyone I know does not venture there at night, why bother with Falmouth and Truro.
