don't have to pay for it

If you mean a free website builder then I can recommend Freeola, not actually free but only £3 a month so nearly free.

http://www.gbbo.co.uk/

This is a initiative offering free websites for businesses in the UK. It takes time to learn all the ins and outs but once it's up and running you can add whatever you like.

I hope this helps??

People are seeing positive results in search engines for their business by updating their own pages on the network, here are a few articles that might prove useful:

Create your own landscaping website for as little as five pounds

Use the network to boost your business

Promoting your projects using the online tools on the network

If you are able to update your member pages say once or twice a week with examples of the work you've been undertaking, both written and with photos, and at the end of piece have your contact details then I think you will some success.

When writing to the site do remember to have half a thought about how people search, so they are thinking locations when they want a job doing at home, for example, 'garden design project near Bury'.

But also remember to use the short posts and images you've uploaded to the network to show potential clients what you have done in the past, a simple link in an email points them directly at a solution you have provided in the past.

One thing I would stress is that the days of a four or five page website are over, search engines are looking for new, and useful, content all the time. But equally so are people on Facebook and Twitter, who love nothing more than posting links to things they've discovered online to discuss and share with others.

Hope this helps, any questions just shout.

PS - I should add, if you are looking for a simple static website allowing you to edit text and upload photos then Google Sites is an easy-to-use option:  http://sites.google.com/

Same thing but this site http://www.gbbo.co.uk/ gives you the introduction and support you need to get started on http://sites.google.com/

thanks for the help everyone and Craig great to hear how websites are changing

Hi Dan, i am going to take over East Dunbartonshire! Just came into some serious money and going to buy up some garden businesses and take over! Be afraid be very afraid!

Only Kidding

I have moved to below Southampton as Head Groundsman for Fawley Parish Council.

The website i am looking to set up is for our contracting side. We Look after schools etc. We have just purchased a new Verti-Drain and i am looking to market our contracting side.

it all depends who that is !  or costs involved.  if you dont know how to do it ,i guess its a plus .  but family /friend is better that a scrupulous web-hosting company that charge you £50 every detail change !!
