Etesia Pro51k blade not stopping

Today the blade on our Etesia Pro51k decided not to stop when the red safety handle was released. If you kind of flick the red handle the blade disengages but as soon as you engage it again it keeps running.I tried oiling the cables and srings etc in the handle bars while on site but it made no difference.I'm home now and need to sort it ASAP. Any ideas?Darren

    Hi Darren

the pro51k has a blade break system made via a split pulley set up which uses a belt tension pulley to engage the blade and a sprung break pad which is used to stop the blade when the belt is not under tension (engaged)

on etesia.co.uk you will find the parts list for this machine so first download that.

always remove HT Lead before working on any machine to prevent an accidental start

the blade is held on with 2 bolts to a coupling which needs to be removed, then remove the big silver cover on the underside.
this will reveal the tension system and belts etc

once you can see under the machine fold the handles forwerd so you can reach the leavers and still be looking under the machine (unless you have some one there to help you, but this is how i do things on my own)

activate the leaver for the blade and check if the tension pully is moving free, if not this could need a little TLC.

when you let go of the leaver the tension pulley should go slack on the belt at the same time the break pad should contact the silver or bottom part of the split pulley
if this is not the case you will need to either turn the pad or replace it.

when you open up the bottom of the machine it will be clear what i have written above and with the parts list infront of you it should only take 20min to work out what is wrong.

order up the bits from the local dealer

Thank you for the comprehensive explanation Neal. I didn't get back online last night as I was piddling about trying to fit a drive belt to my ride-on mower until 9pm (when it rains it pours).

I'll take a look and report back.

  • trying? did u do it? i have one to refit as i did it wrong /or it slipped off- dont want to ruin a belt again !

Yes Rob, I'm sure it was easy when my Westwood was new but quite a few years of rust, grass and dirt make undoing the bolts almost impossible. Forced it on in the end because it wás getting dark!

Had a look at my Pro51 tonight and when I folded over the handles to do as you instructed, I noticed the black plastic catch by all the levers in the handle. It seems that this was sticking and not releasing when the opc is released. A quick adjust of the cable and it seems fine now.
    Thanks for your advice anyway
