Edgworthia chrysantha

Hi

Does anyone out there have any experience of this fantastic shrub?  I have been offered an Edgworthia by a very favourite customer who is moving.  I planted it about 3 years ago and would love to have it.

I know a bit about it - ie aspect, soil preference, pH, hardiness.  It is related to Daphne and I'm wondering if it's as fickle as this other fantastic shrub, ie will it turn up its toes and die on me if I lift and transplant it into my garden?

Some might say I have nothing to lose but I'm carrying on looking after the garden for the new owner and with my love of plants, I would rather see it once a week flourishing where it is than have it die on me!

I am really torn because I want it!

Any advice would be really appreciated!

Hi,

I have had one of these lovely plants for 3 years now in a pot which gets moved around on a regular basis depending on time of year. 

Mine is planted in a pot with a mix of 1/2 multipurpose and 1/2 ericaceous compost.  It has been out in the snow for the last couple of years and survived very well  - however the leaves are slightly smaller than specimens I have seen in the ground. 

Take a risk - it is lovely and the scent is fantastic - I move mine to near the front door when it is in flower.

Hi Liz - thanks for that.  I too would have it in a pot (reassuring to know it should do ok in a pot!) as we're in a frost pocket and also, for aforesaid reasons, would move it about through the year having it near the door when it's in flower!  It's supposed to be only hardy down to about -5 I thought but if yours survived in the snow, it really should be ok.  I think I'll go for it!
