  nope - it also makes it harder to see shill bids where people have friends or family etc bid on an item to keep it going up and up - Had it happen on a couple of Mountain Bikes Ive bid on - Same seller, Same high bidder always pushing it up - watched the seller - same on most bikes but hard to spot unless you watch the feedback Number aswell on the other bidder.

  Your right David,unless bidders ids are open how can we tell if the seller is boosting the price.Anyone out there got any ideas on how to put pressure on ebay for a genuinely open and honest auction

  I find ebay to be full of it tbh - there are no bargains, items with a known value go on as BUY IT NOW as the seller KNOWS they can get that price, auctions are used to attract attention and get bid "UP" to the price on in demand items. Example being many stihl Combi tools - they rarely go for more than 10-20% less than their as new list price, despite being heavily used.

  Mayaswell buy new and get a warrenty.

  if you want to sell something ebay is the best place to sell as you will get the best price for your item, but if you want to get a bargain then ebay is not the place for it now, try www.gumtree.co.uk even tho bidders cant see the identity of other bidders, ebay still know if there is shill bidding going on

  Ach it's no big deal, you should only bid what you want to pay. Any higher and it's no loss, just a few seconds of your time browsing and putting in your bid!

  eBay is crap.

  1stly the buyer protction has more holes in it than the proverbial swiss cheese. Last year I baught a tracked dumper which upon delivery needed a new engine. Seller didn't want to know, no prob I thought and contacted eBay, who told me that buyer protection doesn't cover "vehicles" which they define as anything with an engine, so also coveres mowers! (this had a happy ending as the dumper turned out to be a skip loader, and worth about 5x what I paid, even after the new engine!)

  2ndly I listed a days mini digger hire, like everyone else for £1 which wins a business card. That was pulled as they said it was evasion of their fees. Fair enough though I, and I relisted at £140, but that was pulled as in the description I included my contact details so buyers could check availability. Apparently that leads to 'off ebay sales' 

  3rdly theres no point complaining

  4thly the fees and you have to take paypal.

  Rant over!

  I don't buy tools from ebay now, worn out crap! My local Stihl dealer gives a good discount, no postage and a guarantee!  Oh Phil, eBay own Gumtree, theres no escape from them!

  exactamundo !

  i buy tons of stuff off the bay and have had very few problems, sure machines will need some tinkering with when you get them but you can save a fortune off the new price and when buying big pieces of equipment then  new is rarely an option.

  didnt you go and take a look at the dumper before you bought it? there is no way i would part with my money before looking at what i am buying, you also say ebay own gumtree but gumtree isnt an auction site the price you see is what you pay, i got my 10ft x 6 ft ifor tipping trailer off of gumtree for £1900, 2007 model, come with all paper work tir certificate, you try buying one off of ebay for that price

  I was the other bidder on e-bay for said item.

  I have since bought the same item from a different seller from E-bay.

  In the last week I have also

  Bought a chain saw from e-bay

  Sold a mower on e-bay.

  E-bay if used correct can save you money.
