Hi – at the end of this drive are 10 homes and they want the drive tidied up – it was originally tarmac but they were made to take that up because of the trees.
So as it is now, it's got the gravel stabiliser you can see in the picture and it's edged with inch thick wooden boards. The only problem with it that I can see is the gravel getting washed over the edging boards.
They've had a couple of quotes – one guy wanted to have it all up, put hardcore down – proper kerb stones and 4” of gravel on top. The residents want doing only what's necessary – no more and no less – which I would think is kerb stones and a smattering of gravel.
What would you suggest they need, or should have – with a rough guess at cost? – it's 150 paces long.

if they do go down the route of putting in kerb edgings they will need to take into account of the tree roots and the additional growth as if the kerb edgings are to be concreted in place when the roots grow the will start to push the kerb stones up, i am also guessing they will need something the same level as the track, i susspect they drive up on the grass verge to pass each other, as paul says it will only need a light dressing of shingle (not 4 inches deep) they need to drive along it not get stuck,lol
let me know if this is not a waste of time / petrol ............ i bet they only want to spend £100 total lol..
i would phone to clarify if budget is 1p or £1000 before driving very far away .....

We do maintenance at this place but we haven't time and nor would I want to concrete 300 metres of kerbing... I could do it with 2” planks maybe, probly not the best idea.
I hadn't thought but - as the grass verge is at the same level (and lower in places) as the gravel, that a kerb stone would be sticking up proud of the grass, so I'd have to raise the level of the grass up to top of kerb, ok.
They don't mind paying Rob but they want doing only what's necessary.
Before you waste any more time on this, I think it only right that they give you a budget figure. That way you will be able to whittle away the options without too much work. What would be a realistic amount for each to pay - £1k? If so what could you do for £10k – eg heavy duty Rite L edge http://www.rite-edge.com/products/Rite%252dL%252dEdge.html would cost around £10 per m (£3,000)+ excavating/fixing/making good/additional gravel. Or maybe it’s only £100 per household, what would you get for your £1,000 – not much more than a top-up on existing I would guess.
I don't know their budget but they do all like living here – converted coach house and old trees - it's nice. I know they were quoted 4k for top-up on existing gravel.
As I said, we do the grounds maintenance and there wasn't a question of us doing this driveway job, but I'd said I'd ask on LJN so at least now I can show the guy the rite L edge website – I could maybe make time to put in a 'rite L edge' myself - thanks Colin
