That's interesting Lawnman, we started with an Abbey account, which did not offer that service and Santander have never mentioned it.  Methinks the old ALL & Leic accounts operated with the Post Office, which is now also Santander, I wonder if all Santander accounts might have that option, off to their website I go.

I am with santander and can pay in cash and cheques at any post office, does this not apply to you ?

We are with Abbey (Santander) it drives me to distraction often.

The nearest machine to us, is 13 miles away, often when we get to a machine, (to pay in Envelopes re cheques) the machine won't accept them, because its full! Even if the branch has only just closed. This has happened many a time.

Its a constant dilemma do we post cheques (1st Class, what a joke), last one took 8 days to be paid in, or spend a lot of time & money, traveling between, Scarborough, Driffield, York, Thirsk & Stokesley to find a machine that is working.

And then, it takes another 6/7 days to clear.

I have thought about either not allowing cheques as payment or charging a surcharge.

And cash, you want to pay cash into a bank account, don't be daft!

After speaking to 3 people, I found that option is not available to me, only new customers with a new style account, can have the option of paying cash into their bank account via the post office.

I am trying to convert customers to BACS only payment, it is amazing the excuses you get.

We did have Santander free business banking but the customer service was awful. So we moved to lloyds business and are nearly at the end of our 'free' banking. We have the electronic business bank where you can put in money electronically for free. We have made quite a bold move in that we don't accept cash. We don't accept cheques from domestic customers, we do accept cheques from commercial clients. Finally we take card payments from most cards and the charges for this are far less than paying into bank. Lots of regular customers pay by BACs. It took us most the year to convert everyone!

I dont think I have anything unusual, I have a cash deposit card so can pay in cash at any post office, cheques I put in an envelope which is forwarded by post office to santander.   Had a look at santander website and on business accounts  says you can use post offices.

Agree could be a problem if things go wrong but so far have had no difficulties.

Hey Folks, anyone any experience good or bad of Barclays Business accounts and more so their internet banking offering? Going by their website it looks pretty impressive.

Barlcays have only been operating in Northern Ireland for a few years, after taking over the old Woolwich branches, so its hard to guage experiences from folks from this side of the Irish sea.

Currently with the Ulster bank here, and to be honest, their internet banking offering is dire, plus they have just started charging me £5.00 a month for the privilage. Not impressed at all. On the other hand they have a branch in every town and most large villages, which is very convienent, so trying to weigh up the pros and cons of moving my custom. Perhaps is better the devil you know and all that.

So if anyone has any recommendations of Barclays or anyother business banking accounts so that I can form an opinion, I would be very grateful for their input.

Many thanks,

Andrew // The Outsidedge.

Natwest were doing (and may still be) two years free banking for new businesses. Although I had been trading for many years I persuaded them to give me the same deal. Compared with the Abbey who i was with before Natwest is excellent. Very easy online banking. All accounts linked. Very pleased - however free period nearly over so what charges will end up being I've yet to see.

I do as I feel its good business practice and if the Tax man comes to check my books he does not have to go through my personal banking as well. There are a few accounts that are free if you meet there terms so shop around. But my advise is to move to move your current account to another bank or threaten to I think loosing you as a customer may worry them more if you are in credit and do not borrow. Although the days have gone when you done all your financial deals in one bank or building society as you get better deals by shopping around.
