  • It's not very black & white in regards to gardens.

    RSPB has this.

"We recommend that cutting hedges and trees is avoided between March and August as this is the main breeding season for nesting birds."

    Nesting birds
It is an offence under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built. It will be an intentional act, for example, if you or your neighbour know there is an active nest in the hedge and still cut the hedge, damaging or destroying the nest in the process.

  • PRO

Farmers were cutting hedges around as early as mid-July this year

  • I cut my small hedge two to three times a year as if i dont i cant see out the drive, So who do you follow h&s or Defra/EU ban??? I do always check for birds prior to cutting, all these EU changes on hoovers and garden equipment reductions are enough to make me vote out if we have a EU vote.

  • Lol from experience, If the hedge bounds a road of public view / right of way - obey.

If not, when its convinient cut it - Its almost impossible to get machinery on the land in a wet winter to cut hedges anyway - and even more so if a crop is already in a field, which is most likely will be under these fules - So most folk I know will still continue to cut after harvest or when the grounds firm in August and just ignor the rule makers and their fundraisers who come up with these regulations which are totally un workable - and based on quite "cute" science which is popular to some.
