Well, I know times are 'ard and all that.  Have been looking at Gumtree and viva street and you cannot fail to see people hiring out gardening services.  A couple of adverts have really made me chuckle.  There was a company advertising on Gumtree as OCD Gardening (click into it they also do cleaning).  However this one http://services.vivastreet.co.uk/handyman+west-blatchington-bn3/the... I almost quite admire the guy for innovation!! Amazing

It would be ok around Brampton and Ashgate Lisa. I think it would be a long day going out to my customer's in Bakewell though.

Don't think we could cycle to our jobs over here in Chesterfield Paul - too many hills - probably more where you are than where I'm based.

Good job getting enough jobs within a 7 mile radius. My work takes me 35 miles west and 55 miles east from where I live! Then again I do different sorts of jobs to you.

Ping an email to channel 4 - you never know!

50% of my work is within 2 miles of me. The rest is no more than 10 miles away.

We employ 4 including myself and all of our maintenance work is within a 5mile radius.  With the hard landscaping we travel as far as 7 miles away - but then we are in a very densly populated corner of Essex, just 35mins from London.  Location so often dictates how a business operates efficiently, which is why it is difficult giving meaningful advice to others on how they should operate their business.

One could always fit an electric-assist motor to the bike.

@Andy Thorne thats where my idear originated from

Wow Andy, we've had the same life ! Hope yours has been more enjoyable than mine. I started at 16 pushing dads mower through the streets with bin bags full of grass balanced on top and a hoe resting on the handle bars.

22 years later im still toiling the earth but on a modestly larger scale.

I started a step 'down' from Joseph.  When I was 16-18 I used a wheel barrow loaded with a Suffolk Colt 14", a Flymo strimmer, a B&D hedgecutter, hoe, rake, spade, fork, petrol and extension cables!

I travelled around our town, distance of approx 1/2 to 1 mile and remember charging £3.50ph then.

The shame of being beeped at all the time!

Anyhow I started well, keeping costs down and profits up - invested steadily but surely over the years and now charge many many times the price 20 years later....

Always best to start small and build up, cut your cloth accordingly and stay debt free(if possible) - As Robin always says ;)

thanks andy , (i must remember my saying's :) )    steve @ gardensurgery.com started with a wheelbarrow too, now he is biggest landscaper in stoke/staffs area !

Still good way to cut your biggest overhead fuel and the van could be merit in that!
