Hi Everyone

Im working hard on this years Spon's book. Can I pick your collective brains?

What is the cost of topsoil where you are. Im interested in  prices for planting or turfing quality imported topsoil in 20 tonne loads -as dug or manufactured. What is the quality you usually use?

Please when answering can you let me know where about in the country you are.

Thanks

Sam

Sam we have had the following delivered

As dug x 20ton loads £ 140.00 from Hatfield Herts

Screened 10mm from £ 10.00 per ton (various locations)

Topsoil/blend from £ 12.00 per ton (various locations)

For us;

Farnham SY/Fleet Hants:- 12mm graded - 20T delievered by 8 wheeler - £180+vat.

I think 6mm graded was about a 20% premium on above.

Del within 4hrs, price correct as of last week.

In 20 tonnes loads? your having a laugh ain't ya?

wales ....£35 a tonne
Must have gold in it lol

Do people concur that 1m3 of soil (in normal conditions) = ~1.6Tonnes (just checking my maths ...)

Small/part loads incur massive overheads (delivery wise), so perhaps that price is not unrealistic ?

If anyone has a link to their supplier, it would be good to add them to this thread.
I had 20 tons of class 1 top soil delivered 2 week ago cost £360+VAT Cheshire was excellent soil though

Aproximately Gary yes.

I think JP is referring to tonne bagged topsoil. Our local landscape supplier charges the same price(£35) bagged, £30 loose tipped.

I've bought collected "just dug" from my recycling centre recently for £3/tonne+ vat, quality is very variable.

Screened top soil was ( I'll have to check my price list) around £5-8/tonne +vat per tonne.

Telford, Shropshire btw.

I'm replying to myself now - how sads that.

Forgot to mention the landscape supplier cost (£35 and £30) is what the public pays and is not a trade price.

Contractor discount has to be applied and this discount rate is dependant on £'s spent per annum and sheer haggling ability.

West yorkshire

As dug - £8 per ton, more than 10 tons £6.

Screened and blended (with sand / compost - Amazing stuff) £17, more than 10 tonnes £12.

Hi Everyone

This is really useful. I'll collate this and put a spreadsheet up of all the results in a few days.

Just for info and to answer some well raised points.

Im specifically looking at 20 tonne loads

Based on the official weight of topsoil which is 1450 KG/m3 this should be a 13.8 m3 load.

This would be a standard loamy topsoil with a "normal" moisture content.

If you working on 1.6 t/m3 its obviously a lot safer.

I think its useful to have recycled/ screened prices but can you trust the stuff in your gardens these days. Maybe possible in rural areas but as far as I know generally a no-no  for growing purposes now in London.

I may put a similar notice up on the other groups and I'll let you all know what answers I get

Thanks once again
