Cables can be nasty if they go was told when I did my CS32 that you should lay a heavy coat or bit of carpet on the cable to stop it whipping up.

I used to hire a monkey winch from a guy who'd lost his leg using a tractor mounted winch after the steel rope snapped.

You're right Paul, the small winch I suggest is only good up to a certain size.

I only used a tirfor winch once but I used to hire a monkey winch a lot.

I do lot of this sort of work. What you want is a tirfor winch, I use a T516 and  a tow chain, the winch that  Phil links too will probably work but is a bit more awkward to use and less pull.  A tirfior for me is an essential tool in my van and used frequently.

 

A very easy and quick job with the tirfior, no ground chewing like with a digger and no burnt out van clutches........!!!!

You might well find you don't even need to winch the hedge out. 

I have recently removed a couple of four foot high privet hedges and did these very easily with just a pick axe and some enthusiasm.  One of them almost just pulled out by hand and only a couple of bits needed digging at all.  I arrived with all the equipment to winch it out and after setting up gave it a tug just to get a fell for how difficult it might be and found it came straight out in my hand !! 

One tip is to use a rough cut hedger or chainsaw to slice the hedge vertically into smaller sections before starting so it is easier to handle

I took one out a while back and tbh with a pair of loppers and one of these it came up with no real complaints... ohttp://www.screwfix.com/p/roughneck-post-hole-digger-17lb/62496 I keep one of these plus a mattock heavy duty fork etc in the van all the time for just such jobs...I can see the advantages of the winch thing and may add that to the tool list..this also works so just an alternative well at least on this scale of grubbing up ;-)
