If I were you I'd continue writing letters.
I'm sure you'll know what properties are within your locale so why not make a list of the ones you'd like to have in your commercial portfolio and do a bit of research.
It's always impressive to be able to quote a few facts when pitching for a new job.

Thanks for info. What strategy did you use when you owned a grounds maintenance business?
The internet wasn't the same tool as it is today (although we had email) so we used a mixture of local paper advertising, word of mouth and letter writing/card drops and of course sign written vans.
Our town council contract was won after responding to a notice in our local herald paper.
