I work the same way, 6ft between posts, 4x4inch posts, rails at 3.6m, so 3 posts per length of rail. also at 6ft high that is 3 rails to support. i don't use arris rails since i think they are quite ugly due to the triangular shape. I charge materials plus 20% and £30 a post and closeboarding labour. i do 10 to 15 posts per 2 days depending on ground, first day is setting posts, then i go back second day once posts have set to rail and closeboard. not a big earner, but at the same time its not hard work either.

Hi Phil, as Tony has mentioned above, isn't that type of fencing prone to sagging ?. 3m of closeboard fencing is a lot of weight, unless the vertical boards sit on a horizontal gravel board. As I said in my above post, happy to be educated, I have always worked with 3.6m lengths of horizontal rails, posted at 1.8m.

scarfed arris rails come at 3 metres that is why you would put the post at 3 metres scarfed arris rails into morticed posts 1.8 metres high, i would charge £65 per metre

Why would you post at 3m lengths when the horizontal rails are 3.6m ? Never seen a wooden fence posted at 3m apart. All 1.8m high wooden fencing should be posted at 1.8m lengths. Industry size, and cut to stop waste of materials and wasted time. 95% of a fence should be built in this way and only cut where it returns, drops in gradient and finishes. Dont get the 3m post spacing !! Happy to be educated though :-)).

Good Lord,!!!  Shocking prices!

They are a fencing company and do a lot of work around here. Another example for you. One of my clients had about 32 panels erected last year. Again 3m close board. The guys doing the work told me that the quote had been on the basis of them erecting 6 panels a day, which by the way was a bit adventurous given the terrain that they were about to negotiate. The total was about £7500.00 which would equate to about £234.00 per bay. Different company and larger than the one I mentioned before.
Therefore these are prices quoted by fencing practitioners.

does any one use postcrete for concreteing their post's in

Yeap always use postcrete one bag per 5 x 4 post sometimes 1.5 bag per post.

Round this way we are all generally on cant rails (no arris rails).

For a 1.8m tall closeboard (2.4m posts / 2.4m rails / 3 rails per bay / 150mmx22m gravel board) you would be looking at ca £38/m supplied and installaed.

We dont space any further than 2.4m apart, alhtough I have seen site work with up to 3.6m spacing between posts...!

Dont tend to use postcrete (ballast and cement mixed on site). I find that 1 bag of postcrete can sometimes be  bit too little in the hole?

Yup, I'd go along with all of that, apart from price.  Not being solely a fencer, I would price per job.

A 50x50 peg knocked in behind and fixed to the gravel board will help alleviate sagging, which has also been mentioned above.

Never use postcrete anymore. we can knock up a barrow of damp mix concrete in no time. Its a lot cheaper. if you ram it in well then it will hold the post fine and the post can be tweeked if necessary during the day, then a liberal application of water sets it off at the end of the day. Once post mix is wet thats it. Never seems as firm as knocked up concrete either once its gone off.

Down in sussex we can get ended arris rails up to 3.6m. normally fit 3m bays on a gravel board with a centre stump. Never ever had one blow down, or sag.

Cant believe some of the prices quoted. We do quite a bit of fencing and i normally price on the job, rather than on a bay or run price, but sounds like time to up the prices!

I'm with Thermo 55: 3m bays between posts with a middle supporting peg.  If it's a long run of fencing I mix my own 'no fines' concrete. If it's a couple of posts I may buy Postcrete.  Pricing would depend on whether it's new fencing or charging a premium if you have to use the old post positions.  I don't price it by the meter, rather materials plus labour, logistics and old fence disposal: it's all about the service we offer guys, don't get tricked into pricing per hour or per m.

to a certain extent i can see the logic in a meter or a bay price, but what about when its a long site with limited access, or youve got obstructions etc. I normally look at a bay price as a check after ive priced it normally.

so now weve got a roughish range of bay prices, what about a price for panel and post installation, assuming 6 foot lap panels, gravel board and 3 inch post?

Haven't been asked for that type of fencing for a long time, everybody wants and i advise to have close board panels on 12' gravel board with slotted concrete posts,i charge £110 per panel this includes taking down and disposing of the old fence, people round here don't like replacing panels to often.

I would agree with you there, not that keep on the way concrete posts look but at least they dont rot like most wooden posts seem to now.

cant stand the stuff, but people are often driven by price or matching whats in front of them, regardless of the decent advice you give them!
