when i erect closeboard fencing i always sit the feather edges on gravel boards, i use 150mm x 50mm preasure treated timber for my gravel boards, this way there is never any sagging, it might sound over the top on thickness but saves haveing to dig an extra hole, an extra post & extra concrete, also saves time and saves customer a few quid, more chance of getting the job

Hi Phil, as Tony has mentioned above, isn't that type of fencing prone to sagging ?. 3m of closeboard fencing is a lot of weight, unless the vertical boards sit on a horizontal gravel board. As I said in my above post, happy to be educated, I have always worked with 3.6m lengths of horizontal rails, posted at 1.8m.
phil smith said:scarfed arris rails come at 3 metres that is why you would put the post at 3 metres scarfed arris rails into morticed posts 1.8 metres high, i would charge £65 per metre
www.mibservices.co.uk said:Why would you post at 3m lengths when the horizontal rails are 3.6m ? Never seen a wooden fence posted at 3m apart. All 1.8m high wooden fencing should be posted at 1.8m lengths. Industry size, and cut to stop waste of materials and wasted time. 95% of a fence should be built in this way and only cut where it returns, drops in gradient and finishes. Dont get the 3m post spacing !! Happy to be educated though :-)).

lol, you beat me to my next question

all the fencers around this area use 3 metre arris rails, each bay is 3 metres between posts, thats just the way it is, never heard of putting another post between the 3 metres making it only 1.8 metres

thats the norm for up here in Jockland Phil. Amazing the different styles across the UK

My local timber merchant does arris rail in 2.4, 3.0 and 3.6mtr lengths
For most jobs i use the 2.4mtr which seems to be the most common round my way anyway, dont often see 3.0mtr post spacings and if you do, more often than not the bottom rail midway point is braced with a small vertical piece of arris rail as well as of course sitting the FE lengths on the gravel board.
Permalink Reply by Nic Johnson on April 7, 2012 at 22:52 last time i did some i used 3.6 rails and posts inbetween so 1.8m spacing very strong fence i agree with paul on the 2.4m and i would go to 2.4 using gravel boards but 3m seems a long way between posts to me as well
Permalink Reply by Nic Johnson on April 7, 2012 at 22:53 they must be making a killing at £350/3m less posts and high cost doesnt seem right to me

Local fencing company I know prices at about £350.00 per bay. That is 6' high and 3 m bay. Close board panels, posts, rails, gravel boards etc. Most close board I see has the bottom rail supported and therefore when all panels are nailed to all 3 rails they are all well supported. Don't sag etc.
