Checking over new lawns before cutting???

Do people do this?

It may pay to do it as i had my 3rd cut of a new clients lawn today and have been stepping the height down as requested. The first 2 cuts were fine but today i hit something with an almighty thump and blade pretty much stopped. Upon inspection it was a 3 inch steel pipe which must have been an old swing or something that had been cut off pretty tight to the ground. The first cuts didn't reach it but today i hit it pretty solidly.

It's safe to say it is the worth contact i have ever had, the blade pretty much stopped and the mower is vibrating pretty badly, what do you reckon? I know I am looking at a badly bent blade at the very least if i am lucky but could it have bent the shaft or what else may have bitten the dust??

Oh and its a honda hrx 537

Oh the pain...... Bring on the sympathy/chastising

  • I hit a piece of angle iron last year with the Etesia which stopped the engine dead, but apart from a rather large nick in the blade there was no other damage. whew!!
  • hmmm, that is good to know it maybe is just a new blade. need to sharpen them anyway so i'll get the sockets out and cross my fingers
  • did you tip it up (opp side to air /fuel filter) ? to have a look ??????
  • I always check over very long grass first before i cut it, especially in council estate houses. These people have all sorts of crap hidden in their lawns, stones, glass bottles, beer cans, i have even mowed over some barbed wire before.

I mowed my phone once with countax. It flew out the side of the deck at 100 mph. New phone required but the sim was ok !

I have a Hayter Double 3 that I acquired off a pub I do maintenance for. It has severe shaking and an extremely bent crankshaft, apparently due to someone catching a large lump of metal chain that was tied around a street sign (assumption being someone had locked a push bike to it sometime). I always try and check long grass before mowing - or do it over with my swinging blade Hayterette to avoid machine damage.

  • i might start it without the main blade and see how bad the vibrations are.

I mowed over a DVD player once in long grass in a council house garden... and I thought I had checked the lawn over!!!

  • frogs are a lot cheaper to mulch than steel pipes though.
  • Frog + strimmer, made me realise the full face shield is quite a good idea.
