CASUAL EMPLOYEES
Hi all,
I have just had a lad on a part-time 15hrs a week work trial as a garden labourer.
He is hardworking/punctual etc and I would now like to take him on, but on an 'as and when' basis.
He is currently claiming job seekers allowance but, fair play to him, wants to sign off and work for me to get experience which will help him get into full-time employment.
Is it possible to employ him on a casual basis, ie One day one week, four days the next etc or do I have to provide him with set hours?
Also, how would I set this down in a contract? Your hours are 0-40hrs? etc

It's called an atypical contract and the wife says it's fine as long as the contract is clearly worded.

Have to say Andy, employing someone is a two-way thing - you both make a commitment and from that you hopefully get loyalty. Fluctuating the hours as you suggest, doesnt really show commitment to me.

We have discussed this and he is agreeable to it.
The aim is to give him an average of two days a week. If that is one day one week and three days the next it is still an average of two days a week.
The situation is aimed at helping us both with the ultimate aim of getting him a full time job with a larger company, as he has been out of work for three years. I accept he will be looking for other jobs - and I am encouraging him to do so - he is gaining experience and I get the benefit of his help.
I don't see a problem with this scenario and neither does he.

Take him on as an apprentice and goes to college and get's experience with you, I have someone and it has been fantastic don't want to work alone again.

Hi there,
Yes, funnily enough the lad himself has mentioned this but I am not sure this would work in practice. The problem is that I am only able to offer him work to October at the latest, when my contracts end. I'm part time myself through the winter.
