As strange as this suggestion seems - it can work, with this type of issue having been seen elsewhere. I used to see similar and think it was fixed in an iOS update.
Turn iPad from one orientation to the other and try again and/or turn it back again.
ie from portrait to landscape and /or back to portrait.
It seems to wake up some piece of screen interface coding !
Hi Darren
It's difficult to give you an answer without actually witnessing what happened during the process.
I'll send you an message, try and make a note of what happens.
Regards
Phil
Typed message.
Press "send", button greys out while being pressed, back to normal upon release.
Nothing else happens.
Gary, tried it in landscape and portrait but both the same. Good suggestion though.
Darren
P.s. I am still on iOS 5.1.1 as my hard disk doesn't have enough space to back up my iPad. I've got an external drive but have still got to download a program to change the backup folder.
p.p.s these replies work ok, it's just the inbox ones
Just thought I'd mention it
Darren
Hi Darren
I'll have a go at replicating this shortly and let you know what I get.

Hi Darren
I have the same problem with messages - and a few other interactive functions such as my photo slideshow and chat not loading - and I have spent several hours trying to find/solve the issue. Not ipad & IOS, but iMac & Safari.
Phil was able to help indicate that it was an issue with my browser and also put me in touch with Ning http://www.ning.com/help/?p=5558. Have also been looking at mac forums etc. I have tried all kinds of stuff from clearing caches, to enabling Javascript, to trying different things within my local network to resetting Safari, but all to no avail with these functions.
I think the issue is - and it might be the same for you - is which version of Adobe Flash Player you have. On Ning's troubleshooting page it has:
Chat/Videos/Photo Slideshow won’t load
All of these features run on Adobe Flash Player – if Flash isn’t installed, is outdated , or is corrupt, they may not display properly.
Whilst my Imac doesn't seem very old to me, it is 10.5.8 and the latest version of Flash Player I can have with that installed (10.3.1883.67). I can't get a more recent version and Chrome and Firefox also think my mac is too old to support their browsers.
I think Ning must use a more recent version hence the recent loss of function (since about xmas)despite them saying that Mac 10.5 and above is ok.
Whilst I can still post like you, it is frustrating not to be able to have full functionality of the site - but I cannot afford to upgrade my mac.
Don't know if any of the above is of help - but worth checking if you have the latest version of Flash Player installed.
