  • Have you bought all of these tools separately or as a combi unit

  • Separately mate I was going to buy the combi to be honest but was a bit worried of being left with nothing if it broke down.
  • You have a good collection now.

  • My servicing is to clean the air filter regularly, grease the hedgecutter and strimmer heads, and sharpen the blades. That's about it until something goes wrong, when the shop replace things like plugs if needed.

The only other thing is the 4-mix engine valve setting. I've tried this, and it's simple, but I'm not getting it right as I need to do it every ten hours or so.

  • when they stop working i service them, the most common thing to go wrong is the carb gets gummed up which is a quick clean out or a carb kit (gauze filters).

replace your hedge cutter blades when they get blunt, £50'ish?

  • PRO

Or send 25 odd minutes sharpening them with a die grinder.

  • £50 sounds cheap. What's the price for a set of 30" Stihl blades?

Ten minutes regularly with a flat file or Dremel will keep them sharp, just as a lick with an oilstone every day keeps the secs sharp.

Sharp tools means less work, less stress to the machine or your hands, and a better finish.

Great time to add a regular reminder. When did you last sharpen your hoe, lawn edge trimmers, half-moons? :-)

  • I use stuff really hard if it breaks i buy new its more than likely earnrd its money many times over.

Time spent doing maintenance could be spent earning.

Im well suprised how long Honda and Stihl stuff lasts.
  • Regularly check each tool yourself for obvious stuff (loose screws/dirty filters) and get it to a service centre whenever you hit any problems (or indeed any drop in performance).

As Paul said, keep them sharp and it'll make all the difference. I pay to get all mine sharpened often only because I don't think I can match the results that I get from my dealer.

If you struggle with the costs of a service centre, then make sure you're doing everything you can in-house (if you have the spare time). At the moment we get it all done for us but it depends on your set up.
