  • Try something like Praxis, Cabadex etc.

Cant remember the exact timescales but they can be used much earlier than most selectives.

  • I think ProGreen do a version of it too?

    Prolax rings a bell.

I was thinking about adding Cabadex to my list of chemicals, had hoped to get some advise from some of the suppliers on here...

  • I had a problem with a slow establishing lawn and after searching through found and used barclays holster as it can be applied just 2 months after overseeding.

    Hi Robbie,

As Jim alluded to you need to be careful on newly sown grass.

He mentioned Praxys and he's right this can be used quite early on newly sown grass.  The timing for use is 'at or after the two leaf stage growth which is approximately two months after seeding'.   We also stock Polax (exclusive to Progreen) which can be used at the same growth stage.

Polax has the exactly the same active ingredients as Praxys and comes in a handy 500ml pack, so is an ideal alternative if you don't want a large amount of product.  It is also worth bearing in mind that Praxys has recently changes its pack size to 2 litres which makes it a more affordable than the old 5lt size. Both give excellent control of all turf weeds including creeping butter cup, slender speedwell & spearthistle coverage is also strong for both products.

I've put the links on the product names if you want to have a look at them.  Feel free to give us a call if you need any advice 0800 032 6262, or 01778 394052 if you are on a mobile it may be cheaper.

    Hello Gardens4u,

There is a strong history of natural plant extracts being synthesised into weedkillers and pest control products so from that point of view there are many natural products already, eg: pyrethrum for insect sprays is derived from tanacetum (feverfew) of the asteraceae family.

Likewise the term ‘organic’ can mean various things to different people but we do have a natural extract that has some research backing on treating weeds.

Barrier H is a citronella extract, available in a 5lt ready to use bottle with an applicator (it can be bought without one too). Research quoted by the Forestry Commission in 2002 trialled a very heavy application of Barrier H (2200l/ha) that controlled most weed species at the seedling stage. It is of course ideal for treating ragwort, even when flowering and used normally it will not do any major damage to grass. Fine lawn species may require a test patch before proceeding however!

Otherwise the other products such as Polax & Praxys as mentioned above are another proven route and they will certainly not only control a wide range of weeds in turf but also the harder to treat ones such as slender speedwell, white clover and creeping buttercup - which Barrier H may well struggle on.
