I spend a fair amount of time in wellie boots, cheap and cheerful from Arco @ £12 a pair.
I'd go for steel caps every day, and steel soles.
Even if you're using a fork it's too easy to poke your foot, and treading on sharp objects can be nasty. Even thorns can go through soles in some cases.
Just not worth the risk with safety kit. Footwear, eyes and ears, good gloves, some things should never be compromised on.
You can get boots with 'caps' that are not steel so your feet don't get as a cold.
Strauss S3 Safety boots - Every time :-) - steel toe cap & mid-sole (available as shoes, low ankle and high ankle boots).
I wear them all year round in comfort. So, so lightweight, Cordura / Dryplex waterproof lining, material based boots so insulating and in available in several colours/styles.
Thanks for the responses so far. Gary, have you a rough idea of the cost of the Strauss boot? And as a point of interest, would they be marketed as a work boot and found in Jewsons for instance? Or should I be looking in Scats?
Your wish is my command :-) http://www.engelbert-strauss.co.uk/Footwear/S3_Safety_Footwear/List
Mail order only, superb catalog for work clothes, shoes, PPE, waterproof stuff minor tools and admin stuff. German company with UK HQ in Surrey (where you can pick your order up from if local).
Get on their mailing list, very good packed free physical catalog available
Must mention I would never work without toe protection indeed some insurance companies will not pay out if your not wearing them also I think I'm right in saying that only safety boots are tax deductible.

My feet never get wet, the bottoms of mt trousers never get wet and my feet are always nice and warm. Wellies are cheep as chips from a car boot, well they are not expensive new really so for me it's a win win.
