Banned from buying fuel!

Went to my local garage tonight to fuel the van. No probs.

Then pulled out my usual five litre petrol can only to be told over the tannoy. 'We can't serve you'.

Went in to be told. 'We can't serve you fuel for a petrol can on police orders because of the riots'.

Bearing in mind I'm based in Glasgow, about 300 miles from the nearest riots I was less than impressed. Pointed to my top embossed with company name and explained I was trying to run a business not start a riot but no dice.

I've been using this garage for about four years and put thousands through their till but it seems I have gone from valued customer to potential rioter overnight.

Unfortunately in all the years I have used the garage I have never seen this woman behind the till before as I don't believe there would have been a problem with the regular staff.

I'll be back tomorrow to fill up and if I don't get served tomorrow I won't be able to work. If they don't give me fuel tomorrow then there will be a riot!

Anyone else had this problem?

Also, I've worked out a fitting punishment for the rioters. Four years running a garden maintenance business.

  • I filled up a jerry can this evening, paid for it then on the way out saw a sigh saying you can't fill jerry cans! But hey ho! Must admit I keep my Jerry cans on the side door so I don't know if the woman thought I put 5ltrs of petrol in the van!
  • Some people are just so thick. I'd be tempted to ring the police and have a word with them about amending their advice to petrol stations as the staff are too stupid to use discretion.

If the police get stroppy and say she was right to refuse you then lodge a formal complaint.

  • open petrol filler cap ,  wait for pump to come on....

then get fuel can out and shoot it in before she will say anything :-0     she will never know .

  • I had the same at a total station near the M3 but when I drove half a mile to the next station also Total, no signs, nothing, so I was guessing that its a ban but only in certain areas? Anyhow to be sure I made sure I brimmed them all up.

  • I can see the logic with this temporary rule............ I don't imagine most rioters would be bothered to try syphoning fuel from a vehicle and locking fuel caps will deter a lot of that as well.  Obvious "trade" vehicles should have been given  an exception to the rule though.

I dont understand the thinking behind some of these rules. If someone wanted to fill a can for whatever and could not do it at the petrol stations they would simply be siphoning petrol from their cars.

Perhaps if they do this again to you then siphoning will get you out of trouble until they decide not to punish those who are trying to make a living.

  • Same here, not sure if its all stations, but our Waitrose had notices on all the pumps yesterday.  Still I suppose it's a small inconvenience compared to those who have had their businesses torched, trashed or looted.

  • This is quite a problem for us!   I went into the usual forecourt which we use every Thursday and attempted to fill three petrol cans.   I was told that I couldn't be served.   The guy behind the till knows me, we joke every Thursday about not wanting their meal deal.   I had two sign written vans, staff in uniform and he showed me a letter from Thames Valley Police.  When I pointed out that it didn't say you couldn't sell petrol in cans he then advised me that it was in an internal memo with a strong recommendation from the police.

Now I had a busy day ahead of me.  Five lawn mowers, strimmers, blowers and hedge cutting gear and no fuel.

His line manager refused to sell me any fuel so when I said that I would take the mowers out of the vans and fill them directly he took me to one side and said that he would allow me to fill up but I must not tell anyone or let others see me as they have been warned that they must not cherry pick who they can refuse to sell fuel to in case of discrimination!!!

Meanwhile two old ladies waiting in the queue behind me kicked off and started shouting that they are robbing a business of his livelihood and letting the yobs win!!

We quickly filled up and when driving off two or three police cars turned up - hopefully not looking for me!!

I like coffee so I stopped off at a BP garage and also "on the run" and asked if I could purchase fuel in cans and both refused.

Lets hope that the garages get better and more clearer advise in future as I for one will be contacting TVP!!!

  • i got a spare 5 ltrs in my van i be pleased of an excuse to have some time off

  • if your using a ride on mower you can use more that a day  i used 15 litres in a day before now with ride on mowers

I haven't filled cans since the riots began so I'm not sure if we would be refused locally.

The problem I've had in the past is being told I can only fill up one 5 litre can per visit !

I avoid this problem these days by parking in such a way that the cans I'm filling aren't visible from the kiosk.

I don't see what the problem is, we have a secure purpose built metal box in each van that can take two 5 litre cans of fuel.

  • PRO

We had this for the last two days at Total Garages (we use LJN Total Fuel cards).

On our local Total garages they have signs on each pump implying that on advice from the Police they are not allowed to dispense into fuel cans.

We spoke to Surrey (via Contact Centre and a personal contact) and they state they have not issued any such guidance but the MET Police had issued some guidance for certain areas in London.

Checking with Total Customer Services they admit it was an HQ edict issued to ALL garages to stop dispensing. No common senses, no local knowledge or mitigating circumstances allowed.

How Bl**dy stupid. My guys are in sign written vans, with logo'd vans captured on CCTV and using Total Fuel cards. How much more proof they want that we are not going to fire bomb anyone.

If we were, then it would easy enough to decant enough from a car using a pipe !!!

As Gary said, the answer is to shield the cans and fill up thru side doors......
