Areas that could flood?

Was anyone affected by flooding last year? I noticed that the environment agency has completed some work in Middlesbrough, adding on a channel to the River Beck to contain extra water.

With more use of permeable paving it could make a difference but maybe not for a few years.  Has anyone done any flood prevention work or been in an area that they think needs changing to avoid future floods?

  • Round my part of the world they dig plenty of big drains and build pumping stations.

  • Do they work? Are there any new ones being put in?

  • In the main they do. Most of this area in terms of height is below sea level with many of the rivers and drains well above the height of the surrounding land. About ten miles away from where I work is the lowest point in the country at Holme Fen.

This is a link to a short blog I wrote a while back on a subject that holds a great deal of fascination for me.
