Any tips on getting moss off roof tiles?

We have been asked by a couple of customers if we can remove some moss from their roofs. I'm not talking about every single bit, just the big lumps that eventually make their way into the gutter or onto the patio etc.

I would prefer not to get right on to the roof as its obviously questionable.

Would a broom head on an extension pole suffice?

Has anyone any other ides or experience?

Cheers.

  • I've seen a guy using a hoe attached to a broom handle, got him right up the roof and didn't look as if it was damaging the surface of the tiles.

I've got a Wolf Garten 4m pole and was thinking of buying an "attachment" to fit onto the end but not sure which one would be the most effective. They don't seem to make a "Roof moss scraper" :-) so not sure if a broom head would suffice or maybe a lawn rake?

Do they do a plastic tined lawn rake?

They do a hooked/curved shape scoop for dragging snow off the roof but not sure if that would work.
  • Use a hoe! I said it in post number 2....

If you need me to post a pic of the hoe attachment I could?

It's blunt enough not to damage the tiles, and worked perfectly when I saw it used.

Two ways depending on your level of bravery/stupidity.

    1. Sensible (ish) ..as per previous posts use a hoe and a small headed brush from a secure ladder and pull it towards you.
    2. Brave (or stupid) .... On to the roof and using a stiff broom, blower, and a moss rake attack it from above.

Seen both methods used, option 2 was a young man who obviously had no fear (and/or brain) but personally I'd advise a call to a local roofing contractor and let him have the problem.

Remember a fall from ladders or roofs will not kill or hurt you but the landing certainly might!
