This has been touched up on a few times over the last few weeks on the forum I notice, I now find myself in the situation of having to re-name my business.

To cut a long story short my good lady qualifies as a doctor in the next few months and has a Job starting back down south in Chester in July/August. Currently live and work in Edinburgh, things have gone really well etc etc would love to stay but after many hours of chat we have decided to move.

Having thought long and hard whether to keep things going or take on a job at a large garden/estate and work my way up to a head gardeners position, I think once you’ve had the taste of being your own boss and running a compact little gardening/landscaping business I would find it hard to go back. So I’ve decided to start things up again down south.

I’m getting there, sorry to bore you all.

Business names wise I’m thinking along the lines of using my name:  James Rowlinson Gardens or possibly Wildwood Gardening/Wildwood Gardener, hit a mental block with other ideas. I mainly concentrate my work on maintaining larger private gardens with smaller landscaping projects every now and again. Goes with out saying I can't carry on using my current trading name http://www.edinburghcitygardener.co.uk/

I feel much better for getting that of my chest. After all, friends and family are helpful but I value an opinion from a professional point of view.

Thanks for listening

James

Think long-term!

How large a geo area do you need, in order to earn a crust?
I’m not keen on using geo name targeting for domains as you have found out it limits you as your company develops
Think generically i.e. wildwood is fine for some aspects but not others
…carry on this list and sort out a list of pros and cons and then illuminate where necessary

Finally remember you are moving into an area that has a number of well known and successful colleges tossing out garden designers and landscapers every year. USP’s, experience…very important play to your strengths.
I belive that is where Green T started from Graeme, some where near Chester/North Wales and yes I've had some good business from my gf's doctor friends already ! She has good networking skills lol

Re the name Karl and Richard, Edinburgh city gardener has worked well for me but I now feel I've shot myself in the foot a little having to change the business name. Chester city gardener would be a good name to use, but if the situation of moving were to arise again I would have to go through the same process again.

I'm on the verge of buying wildwoodgardening.co.uk domain name ...I like it. watch this space as they say.

Its a pleasure to receive such knowledgable info from the forum, I hope to be able to give some back where possible.

Many thanks
cheshire county gardener

chestercitygardener

wags gardener ? ;-)
just out of interest nearby is:

wychwood park a golf course / complex / hotel etc for the wealthy cheshire cats / or guests.
Had the same problem last week, you obviously sound like you know your stuff..Don't see anything wrong with
James Rowlinson something or other..at the end of the day it is you that's going to be accredited for your work and not the name you call it..That's what i took from my discussion on it last week. Good luck on your relocation!!
