Advert for local mag

Hi Guys,

I have just been sorting an advert for a local magazine that goes to all the AB readers local to me. I like what I have done but feel there is something missing, just not sure what.

The reason behind it being black is none of the other guys in the mag use black, there mainly whites, greens and golds.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • I like the black and your logo but if that's the actual size of the add the text is way to small! I can hardly read it! Maybe the add needs to be bigger or have less text?

  • It needs pictures in there Kieran. A picture tells a thousand words and will bring the advert to life. You are offering a creative range of products but without wanting to be rude the advert lacks creativity. It also looks a little bit old school and might not sit well with the type of clients you are trying to target

I would be absolutely ruthless with the text and remmove anyhting non essential. The bit about taking the utmost care is not necessary as clients will expect that anyway. By being ruthless with the text you will make it look less cluttered and more professional

Also what about printing the text over the top of one big image. Just my Tupenth worth but I spend a lot of time working with our inhouse designer on graphics and I like to think I've learnt a lot about it.

If you want, send me an email tommorrow with your company logo and I will get him to knock something up to demonstrate what I mean

    steven@londonstone.com if its helpful

  • This is the publication. MK Pulse

  • Ross- the add is 88.5mm x62mm.

Andy- No its not been proofread yet luckily, TBH, spelling etc isn't my forte.

Steve- Thanks for the offer, I may take you up on it tomorrow, i'm going to have a play first though, I think you're right about the pics, i've just had a look at the other ads again, there full of them. You speak a lot of sense.

  • Hi Kieran

I definitely think the text is too small then as the PDF is actual size.Your customers may struggle to read it so you wont get the message across? Unless you customer is Andy who can read it quite well!
I would slim it down or as i said make it bigger. Not sure about a picture background i would keep it clean simple and to the point-like me!

  • iv had a re-jig and have came up with these...

  • hi Kieran

I prefer the layout of the first one though i think the image isn't specific enough just looks like a picture of any nice garden , if you see what i mean? The pictures in the second are more specific you can see you have done the deck and the fence and they relate better to the text.I can read the text easier in both too. They are much better though! hope that helps?

  • Are you sure the mag will work?
I once spent £450 a quarter of my annual marketing fund on one advert in a 10000 circulation of A-B property's not one enquire, wow it hurt.
    Biggest is not always best.

  • I would still declutter further and remove unnecessary information. For example, I dont think you need to write "services included" as its obvious from the bullet points that they are the list of services offered. By removing the "services included" you could then pull the bullet points up into the space and line them up with the image. This would make the advert look tidier and would also give you more space at the bottom section which at the moment looks cluttered

  • There is another guy in there who has been in for years who gets work from it, all I need is 3-4 calls a month from this add and that would keep me going with my other adverts too. Also its not as expensive as your ad was.
