A Miscellany of Garden Wisdom

I have a pocket book of the above title by Bernard Schofield. It contains a collection of gardening tips and homespun wisdom 'obscured by time and memory'. Some of the stuff is incredible. Like soaking flower seeds in perfume to let out that smell when they bloom. Another is wrapping aluminium foil around the roostem of cabbages to prevent cabbage-fly larvae attack, and the best place to plant blackcurrants is an old nettle bed. Also, for the finest flavour strawberries, plant in top soil from around pine or spruce trees and mulch later with needles from same. I wondered what wisdom other gardeners have to share. Perhaps we could have our own compendium.
