  • workers need to be paid a wage they are willing to work for but also make you a profit.

I would offer a basic wage but have it bonus related so that they don't make a 3 day job last 5 days but if they get it done in 2 days there something extra for them.

Remember as well your driver may need trailer licence.
  • £7.50 and £6.50 respectivley if its all through the books, PAYE, etc.

  • I dont employ currently, but may want to next year, when people quote a wage is that take home or before Tax and NI, as it always seems a bit low to me, to be paying for example, an experienced worker £7.50 before Tax, i know theres the employers contribution to tax to consider as well for the overall cost/wage, among other things, but even so!

  • Working in tesco full time is £6.80ph

during hard times everyone seems to think that wages can drop like a stone. thank goodness for minimum wages or else we would all be on £3.00 ph and customers would want to pay a lot less to.

  • £7.50 per hour equates to £15k a year if working full time and with no additional benefits. A very low wage but when the cost of running a van, insurance etc etc is factored in and what customers are prepared to pay is maintenance a viable and expandable business model? I am increasingly beginning to think money is easier made elsewhere. This is the conundrum we have faced these last few years.

Anyone looking to employ needs a full understanding of their costs, margins and desired profits, along with understanding associated costs of an employee beforerecruiting, ie

    - employers NI -12%
    - increase in ELI & PL
    - H&S Policy - verbal or written
    - vehicle costs ( if relevant)
    - mandatory or optional training & certificates
    - additional tools. -"-

    To name but a few.......

A rule of thumb I was given years ago suggests you charge out between double or treble what you pay them to cover your overheads/costs. This can be confirmed retrospectively by reviewing your accounts. There also a magic number - 42% ( the answer to the universe) - go see if you can work out what this refers to ....:-)
  • The minimum wage is a bollocks reference point, ignore it. Pay people on their ability not some idiotic government figure, a good worker is worth a good wage, a sh1te worker is worth very little. Not sure listen to Milton Friedman on the subject, the best argument I've yet heard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ca8Z__o52sk

  • The minimum wage is the law of the land.

So if any Employer pays you below it, why would you work for such a two-bit business as they are either:

    a. A crappy Employer, not worth working for

    b. Your Employer is a law breaker.   If they break the law on this, what other laws do they break?

Either ways, find yourself another job.

  • Steve you obviously did not either watch the video OR understand what he said. I would suggest that you watch it until you do understand what he is saying he makes a very very important point and one which the minimum wage breaks and which makes it a farcical law, of which I will happily admit there are many.

A bylaw says that you can kill a Welshman with a crossbow if you find him after midnight within the City walls of Chester, would you say this is a good bylaw? After all it is the law of the land...although admittedly superseded by modern law, none the less it is still law.

I return to my main point (above) pay people what they are worth, not what the idiotic state thinks that they might be. If you wish to read an excellent rant on the subject http://order-order.com/2009/10/02/no-post-conference-brown-bounce/#...

  •  You need to pay the foreman enough to not make it worth his/her while going self employed or you will end up with someone who is just not up to the job. His/her assistant can only be on £6.50 - £7.00 ph no matter how good they are unfortunately as this is what the market dictates. The assistants "carrot" is that one day he/she can work up to being a foreman.
