Hi guys and girls, I've recently picked up a few customers that are asking me if I can give there lawn a striped finish. I also feel that striping my customers lawns will tie in nicely with the lawn care work I do. I'm looking to get a new mower this year and probably have a budget of around £900 pounds. Ideally I would have the honda hrx 21" wheeled and roller but this would be a huge expense.

Having looked through the threads on LSJ I have noticed quite a few cons to the roller mowers. As not all of my mowing work is on nice lawns I still need to have a decent wheeled mower. So my question is what would you all recommend as a decent roller mower for around the £300-£400 price range?.

Just shows you Michael everyone has an opinion.
If I was you I'd buy the best you can afford.

Thanks for all the advice, i'm seriously considering this one as it bang on my budget and I much prefer the idea of a new machine to be honest. I'm going to phone a couple of local dealers this week and see what they can offer and ask about getting hold of a demo model.

My last Kaaz was c. £900 all in. That's the equivalent of the Honda pro, and a lot better buy than the lower models in the Honda range. If you can find a local dealer who'll do a good price on a pro-spec machine it's worth every bit of the extra. One day off work dealing with a broken mower will lose you the difference in cost.

I'm all for buying from one local supplier as well, even if he can't match internet prices always. When I roll up with a broken bit of kit I want to be top of the waiting list, ideally repair while I wait if possible. Building a good relationship with suppliers is hugely important to me.

Just through reading some stuff on the threads on LSJ I can see that allot of people seem to have trouble with the Lawnflight and Kaaz type brands. Think I will go for a new Honda and at the end of the day it will come with a decent warranty.

What do you guys think of the John Deere roller mowers?.

Not sure why? I've not read through the older threads but it was problems with my Honda-based mowers that I first posted about here.

The only issues I've had, outside one odd snapped handle that was replaced under warranty after two weeks from new, are the drivetrain problems that are well known. Given that the roller and gearbox are the Honda items they are going to be no different. As I've said, the Kaaz does pick up better in the wet than the Honda, although not by a huge margin. My specialist sells the Kaaz as standard, there are no different costs in running them and they are hundreds cheaper. He will buy in a Honda if you insist, but can't discount it and will be shaking his head as you roll it away.

What were the problems other LJN users had? I guess the 1 year commercial warranty on the Honda might be unique, I can't remember what the Kaaz has. But, the massive price difference would easily pay for a new clutch fork and roller rebuild with money in hand.
