Approximately half the world’s population builds with earth.The properties of earth as a non-toxic, thermally dense material make it an ideal building material in many climates, particularly in extreme heat. This workshop will enable participants to consider its use as a basic shelter material and get practical experience building with rammed earth.

This workshop, run by the UK's rammed earth expert Rowland Keable, will teach you to build with rammed earth, with practical sessions building earth walls, making window and door openings. Rowland will also go through case studies from his project work designing and building rammed earth structures in Africa, Australia and in the UK.

This August Bank Holiday Weekend workshop takes place in the depths of the Wiltshire countryside, to construct a rammed earth greenhouse for furniture maker James Shead, in the grounds of his thatched farmhouse, currently being renovated to near Passivhaus standard by bere:architects.

Evenings 
Rowland will also give evening lectures and a screen will be available if people would like to watch films. Participants are also welcome to bring instruments for evening entertainment around the camp fire!

Rowland Keable, Ram Cast CIC:
Rowland has been building with rammed earth since 1985, across Africa and Australia, and in the UK since 1999. As well as building, he has co-authored a couple of books and a national standard for rammed earth construction, taught in schools of architecture, engineering and surveying and run workshops to a wide range of people. In the last few years he has taught regular contractors how to build some of the largest earth structures in Europe.
